The Peace People began after a tragic incident when three children died from a car accident that had been caused by an Irish Republican Army vehicle driven by Danny Lennon, who was himself shot dead by British soldiers. Mairéad Corrigan, the aunt of the children and Betty Williams, an eye witness to the event were profoundly touched by this tragedy and made up their minds to react.

This sparked a civil rights movement in the late 1960s which was faced with violence from the from authorities and the Unionist side.

To make it worse, violence was at its highest in 1969, when a violent uprising began, which sparked the British government and military to step in which officially began "The Troubles" directly after.

We have a simple message to the world from this movement for Peace.

We want to live and love and build a just and peaceful society.

We want for our children, as we want for ourselves, our lives at home, at work, and at play to be lives of joy and Peace.

We recognise that to build such a society demands dedication, hard work, and courage.

We recognise that there are many problems in our society which are a source of conflict and violence.

We recognise that every bullet fired and every exploding bomb make that work more difficult.

We reject the use of the bomb and the bullet and all the techniques of violence.

We dedicate ourselves to working with our neighbours, near and far, day in and day out, to build that peaceful society in which the tragedies we have known are a bad memory and a continuing warning.

Ongoing Work: Although The Troubles endured for several extra a long time, the Peace People’s efforts contributed to the eventual peace system, which culminated inside the Good Friday Agreement of 1998. The business enterprise keeps to paintings on promoting peace and addressing the legacies of war in Northern Ireland.

Community Engagement: They engaged in numerous network-based initiatives to build agree with and mutual information a number of the divided populations. This protected dialogue projects, peace education packages, and efforts to assist victims of violence.
