This conflict is built on a history of colonialism, religious division, and identity politics. Ever since the (literal) division of Northern Ireland and current Ireland, there has been constant tension from both parties. The Catholics (generally Republican) faced discrimination during this time when in Northern Ireland, leading to heightened tension and more divisiveness.

This sparked a civil rights movement in the late 1960s which was faced with violence from the from authorities and the Unionist side.

To make it worse, violence was at its highest in 1969, when a violent uprising began, which sparked the British government and military to step in which officially began "The Troubles" directly after.
