“Going Up the Mountain” by Trevor Shikaze (The Walrus, 2019) is a short story that reveals a woman's desire to go up a nearby mountain. The story starts with the protagonist we do not know the name of, at a store asking her neighbour about going up the mountain, while picking out dinner. No one seems to have time to go up the mountain, not even the main character herself however, it is constantly in her mind. She later casually speaks to her husband about it as well. They are watching their favourite show and she mentions it but, he seems to just remind her about the plans they have set forth. We also get to see her talk to her sister about going up the mountain, but her sister seems to be challenging her idea on what the mountain wants, and why even go up it. Her life goes on and she is doing normal activities throughout the day, but the idea of taking a moment to go up the mountain still lingers in her mind. symbolism and metaphors are predominant throughout the story, and we see one towards the end where she is fidgeting with the timer on her microwave that had seemed to be the wrong time. She agrees with setting the clock three minutes behind and she continues with her day. She reminisces about going up the mountain, how long it took, the peace if brought once she got up there; and how the small drop of a snowflake on her husband cheek looked so beautiful that she wanted a picture, but it melted because that’s what happens when you do not live in the moment. The author does a great job allowing the audience to see what the desire for peace and staying still for a moment does when you constantly want it but cannot seem to make time for it.

My experience reading and re-reading:

Reading this story, I was a bit confused at first. I was not able to grasp what the mountain meant and why it was important to the main character. After giving it a second read, I was able to see the correlation of going up the mountain and taking a break. Mountains can symbolize many things but one of the meanings I remembered was it representing stillness and firmness. This made me understand the message the author was trying to portray throughout the story. We all are stuck in our own busy lives, we are constantly moving, and never taking a moment to sit back and think. I enjoyed how the author decided to use the simple task of going up a mountain, to represent a moment of stillness/calmness, and showing how life can get busy to the point of being conditioned to stick to a daily routine. While reading this story I began to think about my own life, and how I never take time out of my day to give myself a break, especially with school starting. I noticed the small details connected to the idea of life moving at a fast pace. When the main character tries to fix the clock by pushing back time, and she pushes back time to where she pushed too far. This truly spoke to me as it showed that time goes by and we cannot get that time back. This made me think about my priorities.

Time: time is the most important aspects of life. We move based on time but when it's too late, it seems there is too little time in the world. This story addresses the idea of time moving at a fast pace, and we need to be able to slow down and take a minute. Time is eternal when you are using it to fulfil your life.

Moving at a fast pace: Our lives become a routine that we do not realize is taking up time. This story shows what the normal modern life is- taking care of family, going to work, coming home, etc- and not finding the time to do other activities. The author sets a scene of a modern life, and shows us the consequences of notwithstanding this everyday routine- time will go by-

Making up excuses: Throughout this story, we see the main character continuously think about going up the mountain, but we do not see her doing it. She finds excuses from her everyday life to not go, and when she does have time, she still is in this fixed position of desiring it but not going for It.

How might nursing students benefit from reading the story

The relation between the ideas of this story and nursing is very strong. Nursing and professions that are similar are very time-consuming. To get this job it comes with a lot of hard work and dedication. It is easy for nursing students to take their dedication to the next level and turn it into a tiresome lifestyle. Even I benefited from reading this story and understanding the concept of time. As nursing students, the workload can be overwhelming, and we feel we need to finish everything as fast as we can. This will take away the joy of learning what we are learning because of this fast-paced moving. It is alright to also take a minute for our mental state. Nursing students would benefit from this reminder on how to balance life and understanding that time goes by too unreasonably fast to only surround ourselves with work. Time-management in nursing is key, and we need to care for ourselves so we can care for others.
