Description of what Self-fulfilling prophecy is.

The self-fulfilling prophecy is based on the idea that that society’s reaction to deviant behaviour has important consequences for the future behaviour of that deviant person. Based on the idea that an observer’s beliefs of the expectations about a person or group influence their social interactions, and therefore elicits or create the expected behaviour. (Merton, 1948) We define certain acts such as stealing as criminal and the person who commits such acts is then labelled by society as a criminal. Having been labelled in this way, the person is treated by society in a way that is consistent with the criminal label (fines, imprisonment etc.). This in turn makes the person adopt the label ‘criminal’ as part of their self image and this affects their future behaviour. In short, a person adopts a criminal career as a consequence of being labelled a criminal.

“The process by which one person’s expectations about another become reality by eliciting behaviours that confirm those expectations”. (Smith and Mackie 2000)

Labelling and SFP go together as an explanation of crime and anti-social behaviour – process of the prophecy is that someone is first labelled and then ‘becomes’ the label.
LABELLING – involves a majority group considering a minority group as inferior & using inferior terms when talking about them e.g. hoodie, thief.
STEREOTYPING – thinking a whole group share certain characteristics. It is based on a generalised and simplified view e.g. young offender = hoodie-wearing youth who challenges authority and makes trouble.
SELF-FULFILLING PROPHECY – concept from social psychology that refers to the process of something coming true because it was predicted to happen.

THEREFORE:
PROPHECY IS SET + EXPECTATION = PROPHECY IS FULFILLED.

Strengths:
1, Jahoda found Males born on Wednesday had a significantly higher arrest rate (22%) than males born on Monday (6%). This is a self fulfilling prophecy because boys born on Mondays are named KWADWO (Considered to be mild mannered) whereas boys born on a Wednesday are named KWADKU (considered to be aggressive and short tempered). This is valid data as it comes from crime records, however it has not been replicated so this may just be a one off.
2, Rosenthal and Jacobson found that students labelled as bloomers had improved IQ scores and continued to thrive for the next 2 years in comparison to other students in the class. This suggests the ‘prophecy’ came true because the teachers responded differently to them. This study was well controlled – children were randomly allocated to each condition, however It may be due to teachers beliefs that they were being observed and felt they needed to act on the information they were given. Also this was an educational setting rather than crime.
3, Mandon (2003) found that mothers who believed children would have future drinking habits were fulfilled by children = SFP.

Weaknesses:
1, Studies are correlational - they show a link between expectations and outcome but cause could be due to any amount of reasons. Also a lack of ecological validity – research cannot always be applied to real-life due to the amount of other influencing variables involved in experiments.
2, Not everybody conforms to the label they have been given and may do the opposite to prove that person wrong.
3, SFP only works best when observer and observed are not known to each other.
