A particular species, E. fasciata, is believed to have developed resistance to scopolamine (a TA) because it is a specialist consumer of Datura stramonium. However, other beetles in the genus have been reported as successful consumers of this and other species of plants rich in TAs, though their main host lacks these compounds. I would like to check if there's significant divergence between beetle populations feeding on non-TA expressing plants and populations of the same species feeding on plants rich on TAs to look for possible genes under selection. Does this sound like a feasible proposal? Would the populations under study need to be geographically close?
