I actually didn't take any art classes 7th-12th (which was the high school for my school, because I took music classes. However, in my other classes I typically learned best with a combination of both.  

i.e. a short introduction of the project, lesson, ect. by the teacher and then having the chance to work through it on my own, asking others for help along the way!
