I am planning on watching Percy Jackson and Confetti. Percy Jackson is about a teenage boy who learns out that he is the son of a greek god. But he is also dyslexic and deals with bullying and social separation due to it. The other movie, Confetti, is about a Chinese family whose daughter gets diagnosed with dyslexia and has to move to the US to get an adapted education. While neither of these films have actors that have a learning disability, Confetti is based on a real life story and the mother of the daughter wrote the film. I chose these films because I think that learning disabilities, much like most disabilities, aren't represented often in films or aren't represented accurately.

I have chosen CODA and The Silent Hour. CODA has real-life actors with hearing disabilities, and the Silent Hour involves a non-disabled actor portraying a detective with a hearing impairment from being on the job. I have chosen hearing disabilities because of my interest in the deaf community after taking a Deaf-blindness class. I also am dating someone whose dad is deaf and would like to understand a bit more about the community.

CODA shows real life experiences of being deaf and Finding Nemo shows how a fish born with a small fin learns to adapt. Both films are perfect for helping us understand and feel for those with different abilities.

I am planning on watching the movie CODA which is a movie about a girl name Ruby who was the only hearing individual within her family, this movie found my interest due to the actors having disabilities in real life which supposedly gave the movie a "real life" feel on disabilities, some reviews say. The other film I plan on using is called Out of My Mind on Disney which is about a girl with Cerebral Palsy, who goes to a school a couple days a week with students without disabilities, and joins the quizbowl team... I look forward to learning about these disabilities, and seeing if they are represented significant to the disability they are portraying.

I am planning on watching CODA and 5 Feet Apart. CODA is a movie about a deaf family whose daughter is the only hearing individual within their family. This movie interested me because the cast is actually actors who have disabilities such as deafness in real life. The movie shows real life experiences of being a hearing child in a deaf family. 5 Feet Apart is about two teens who have cystic fibrosis and have to navigate the challenges of following regulations of staying 5 feet away from each other. The actors in this movie do not have disabilities in real life such as cystic fibrosis as their characters do. I remember watching this movie years ago and I wanted to go back and analyze how disability was represented in the movie, as I may not have paid attention to it before.

Denise Chambers

Society & Disability

Reel Disabilities: A Comparative Analysis of Disability Representation Module 3

The two films that I have chosen from my Reel Disabilities assignment are First, Then Barbara Met Alan (2022) and The Peanut Butter Falcon (2019). As someone who doesn't watch much television or movies, I was unsure what to pick, so hopefully, they will be a good watch. Then Barbara Met Alan, which piqued my interest, as this film is based on Barbara Lisicki and Alan Holdsworth, who, despite having disabilities, meet, fall in love, and become leaders in the fight for disabled rights. This film is a documentary; therefore, I felt it would be appropriately represented because there are true disabled characters in the film, and they assisted in the making of the film. The second film, The Peanut Butter Falcon, is an adventure comedy film about a person with Down syndrome who runs away from the nursing home where he resides to pursue his dream. This was my second choice, as it represents the disabled community by telling the world, “Hey, we have dreams we want to chase, too.” I look forward to this project and watching these films.

The 2 films I have chosen are Champions and Peanut Butter Falcon. Both of these movies include actors that have Down Syndrome. Champions is about a basketball team that has different intellectual disabilities and Peanut Butter Falcon is about a man who has Down Syndrome and wants to become a pro wrestler. I chose these movies because my long-term boyfriend’s brother has Down Syndrome and I’d love to learn how to better support him. I was also a part of my high school’s LINKS program and worked with a Down syndrome student then as well, so this will be expanding on my knowledge that I already have, but also it will give me knew perspectives that I might not have thought of.

I plan to watch The Peanut Butter Falcon, which follows Zack Gottsagen, an actor with Down syndrome, as he plays Zak who is on a journey of independence. As well as Where Hope Grows that follows a new friendship between a former professional baseball player, and Produce, a young man with Down syndrome who works at the local grocery store. I chose to watch and compare Where Hope Grows and The Peanut Butter Falcon because both films feature lead characters with Down syndrome played by actors who also have Down syndrome. This makes the representation authentic and meaningful, breaking away from the common practice of casting nondisabled actors in disabled roles.

It is about a man who suffered a SCI and is now paralyzed from the neck down. Finding Nemo is about a young fish with a small fin that makes swimming difficult, yet he shows bravery and determination throughout his journey. Wonder follows Auggie, a boy with a facial difference, as he navigates school and learns to find acceptance and friendship. I chose these films because they both promote messages of kindness, courage, and inclusion. They help people understand what it’s like to live with a disability and remind us that everyone deserves respect, no matter their differences.
