Puritans refer to the movement for reform in the Church of England. Their goal was to rid the church of any catholics. They wanted to create a religious revolution. When Elizabeth died and Charles II dissolved parliament, any connection between church and state, he demanded that anyone be killed that didn't support the church. The puritans left for the New World in 1620 and established the Massachusetts Bay colony.

Puritans had many different beliefs. Some include: total depravity, predestination, and limited atonement. Total depravity meant that everyone sins and that's what makes us all human. Pre destination meant that it was already pre determined by god if you were to go to heaven or hell. Limited atonement meant that Jesus only died for the ones that were chosen to go to hell.

There was a strong belief that the devil was alive and well. Not only that they believed that he was recruiting people to become witches. Some of the symptoms that someone was a witch was: fainting, shaking, talking to yourself. Teens were also very bored at this time since there was no phones, tv, etc. In return they started looking into witchcraft and got interested on how to put curses on people.

By the end of 1632, over 200 people were jailed and standing accused of witchcraft. Nineteen men and women were hanged since they were all convicted of witchcraft. Men as old as eighty years old were killed for not wanting a trial for witchcraft. A lot of people would be manipulated into saying they were witches. Most of the time this was so that they would be able to see their families who were "witches".
