Action plan -

I decided that this activity would be a good opportunity to identify my strengths and weakness and help guid my other activity’s to make them best suited to me. I also don’t want to put too much pressure on this task as I don’t know how accurate the test will be. I hope this gives me some direction and motivation.

After completing the activity and getting my results i found them test rather helpful, although the results mostly negative it gave me a good idea of areas i need to improve on and where to go from here. I decided to I give myself the task of writing 4 small paragraphs on my strengths and weakness and how i can work on/utilise them in my daily life. Overall i think this was a good resource that’s was free and I would recommend to anyone really in any industry.

From the test i have Learned that i have a high level of worry and think everything is going to go wrong. This leads to me not taking key opportunity that could really open doors for me and stop me from trying new things and learning new skills. This is something I have been aware of for a while and have been trying to work on so i stop missing out on vital information and opportunity’s.

This test also identified my high level of social anxiety and how when I'm the centre of attention feeling awkward may undermine my confidence especially when dealing with people I don’t know very well. I do agree with this and can identify that in social situations especially with new people i shut down and struggle to speak and often let others speak on my behalf. I realise now how thins can affect my professionalism and make people take me less seriously and therefore over look me, leading to me missing out of new opportunity’s and meeting new people. I understand how important networking is in my profession and I’m working to improve my confidence and try talking to more people day to day, even small things like saying hello i believe will build my confidence in professional environments.

The test has also shown my lack of impulse control and how i may put my self under pressure by giving into my impulses and not reacting rationally. This is something i can recognise in my day to day and i have been working on my whole life with a therapist to improve. I belive I have come a long way but have a lot further to go in my journey and will continue to use Techniques that i have learnt to further build on my self control.

However this test did identify some areas of strength like my level of assertiveness and social values. I halve a strong idea and purpose of who i am and what i want to do this can lead to butting heads with people but i am a firm believer of fighting for what you believe in. I do understand how this can affect my professionalism but I don’t think that you should stop fighting for what you believe in purely to make others around you comfortable, i believe to make change you must hold your values in all areas of your life not pick and choose when its convenient, i think i make it an effort in my daily life to make change and i believe this is what will become attractive to employers one day.

I found the test overall a good resource and decently accurate despite some things I disagree with. I would recommend this to anyone in the working world to help further improve the skills you have and help develop areas you are struggling with. However i do think the test was overly negative it gave positive buildable feedback that you can take to improve day to day. I think from this test i will take the feedback on during my other tasks and generally in my day to day life. This activity helped me update my C.V and make it more personal and accurate to me and has given me achievable goals to get were I want to be.

Gucci Cosmos

One area i wanted to improve on was my social anxiety and struggles with getting out of the house, i thought visiting the Gucci Cosmos event would be a good opportunity to gain some inspiration from past collections while also getting out the house and doing something. I think the event being about fashion will give me Incentive enough to go and enjoy myself. I want to go and try and create at least 4 quick sketches of things that inspire me to help get over my social anxiety, i believe this is a good way to challenge myself while also being realistic of how much i can handle.

Charity shopping

One area i want to improve on is my lack of inspiration and how i have been feeling burnt out i though going out and looking at trends been and gone will inspire me and give me some motivation. Reusing and reducing is also a huge part of my identity and something i want to make apart of everything I do and i am going to use to trip as an opportunity to search for second hand fabrics for my upcoming white project. I am giving myself the task of finding four items and identifying what season/year i think its from and some information about the piece and who i thinks would wear it.

First item

I found this pair of Vivienne Westwood Melissa shoes i believe these shoes are from the early 2000 and are an older pair of the Melissa flats. Melissa the brand create cruelty free and 100% recyclable shoes made from there own PVC. Alone the brand is recognisable but when they collaborated with Vivienne Westwood the shoes were iconic and very popular at the time Amongst people of all ages and style due to there being such a wide variety and differently styles of the Vivienne and Melissa shoes and reasonably priced they were fairly accessible to all.

Second item

The second item i found is a green leather jacket from river island and was released in 1986. this jacket is gorgeous and i had to get it. I believe the target audience was for young people in there early twenties who wanted to express themselves in a punky yet feminine way. I also think the colour was very popular at the time in both leather furniture but also mini dresses and skirts.

Overall i really enjoyed this task drawing publicly really bright me oust of my shell and I was too Immersed in the drawing to notice all the noise going on around me. I think this is something i will continue to do as it made me feel a lot more confidant in what i as doing and i felt really good after the fact. Moving forward i think i can do more detailed drawings as i will give my self more time and not eel so judged by other to be totally honest no one around me was bothered I was just overthinking it. That is what this task has taught me and I am very grateful as this is something i can bring into my daisy life, i would recommend this task to anyone struggling with public speaking and general social anxiety.

Third item

The third item i found is this wonderful floor length Calvin Klein summer dress. I believe this dress is from 2010-2012. At the time dresses like this were very popular, a simple plain shape to show off the body with interesting designs and fun shapes. This is something you would of caught Kim K in back in 2010 at the beach with big Bvlgari Diamante sunglasses.

The fourth item is a corset like top from MnS. It’s red velvet with beautiful red bead embroidery. I belive this is from the early 2000 and probably was worn by someone’s fashionable nan or auntie but i believe now this top could be used for a really classy evening look and can be really elevated into something beautiful, but also be styled down for more casual events.

I overall really enjoyed this task and found it invaluable i think that if i didn’t do this trip I wouldn’t of gotten out of the headspace i was in and it really inspired me to want to create and take ideas from past pieces and also take the warnings of things that have already gone wrong so I don’t repeat mistakes that have already made. From this trip i also got to pick up some fabrics that i used for other projects so i would always recommend charity shops as you can get really good deals on old high Quality bedding to use as fabric.

The devil wears Prada and Ugly Betty

I watched the Devil wears Prada and the first season of Ugly Betty i find that these two shows are often the only exposure non fashion people get on the fashion industry. I thought it would be a good idea to identify these diffrent fashion tropes and stigmas that aren’t necessarily true but get pushed to the forefront in the media. I think delving into this will be a good opportunity to gain vital industry knowledge and learn to figure out what is just a rumour going around and what is factual.

I plan to identify 4 of these incorrect tropes placed on people in the industry and why that is.

First

The first trope i identified in both the devil wears Prada and Ugly Betty it’s that everyone is really mean. From Betty’s first day to Andy being dragged for her outfit everyone was really mean. I believe to a degrees that the fashion industry can be really tuff but I don’t think that everyone is evil and is out to get you, i believe the industry is far more collaborative and about socialising with all different people without judgment. I feel like fashion is made up of all the rejects of society and understands what its like to be the underdog and usually strive to support and help young designers. I do understand where this has come from as the industry can be brutal but just like anything it takes a lot of time and energy to hone your craft and of course that is going to be a difficult process.

Another thing i have noticed that i just don’t think is true is that people in the fashion industry are dumb and vapid with nothing intelligent to say. I often find that in both the devil wears Prada and Ugly Betty that the love interest see them as less due to there job and don’t think its somthing serious to peruse. For example Andy’s boyfriend is so unsupportive of her job and career generally, its fine when he goes out to work and doesn’t come home until late, but when Andy’s career is finally kicking off and she’s busy with her job making good money (probably more than him) he’s jealous and can’t support her. The same thing happens in ugly Betty where time and time again she gets left because of her looks by a Horrible man who thinks her job is a joke and thinks it all to do with how you look and nothing to do with what’s coming out your mouth. Overall i think men are the downfall of great woman.

In both productions they show successful women as villains. For example both Miranda and Wilhelmina, the most successful fashion and business woman in there franchises are shown as cruel and evil and never applauded for there hard work and determination. They run everything and have done so much to get were they are yet are still not treated like there male counterparts in the shows. I think this shows a real issues in the fashion industry and our society that successfully woman are often seen as cruel and mean when there male counterparts are rewarded for sub par work and seen as hero’s when really they are to blame for the systematic oppression of women.

In Ugly Betty the name suggests that Betty is unattractive and that is often how she is treated, but she isn’t ugly far from it and i think the title of the show is almost making fun of people who view Betty as ugly. I’ve found that when watching the show she is treated as less than and inadequate and they write her off before she even opens her mouth leading to her missing out on major career opportunities when she is more than capable of having a hire role. I don’t think that thins treatment is meant to fully represent all of the fashion industry but make fun of the old unachievable beauty standards. This is still relevant to today as the beauty standard never changes they just becomes another unachievable goal that is placed on young woman. I belive this is a vital lessons for everyone to learn that i will take into my daily practice as a designer and not feed into those same societal norms.

Overall i though this was a good task to understand injustices in the fashion world while also identifying when something is made up. I have learnt to try my best in my work to always make it accessible to all. I have also learned to take these films with a grain of salt, as they often portray a warped perspective on reality. They are also dramatised productions, which by their very nature puts them at the mercy of numerous people, all of whom impart at least a small piece of their own biases.
