They northeast contained better land to farm on however their was no space. Moving west was very different from when they moved to the east because they northeast is made mostly of large cities and the west were open plains. Going to the west there was more room for everyone to claim so land for themselves and start building their own life, farming. The rumor of free land was spread throughout the US and that is why so many people out west. However when they got there, the weather conditions mostly included droughts so finding go land to farm on was a major problem.
