Born on September 17th, 1923 in Mount Olive, Alabama, Hank Williams began his career as a host for WSFA, a local radio station, at the age of 13. By the age of 14, he had formed his band and backing group known as the Drifting Cowboys, and toured the country wearing their iconic hats and boots.

In 1949, Williams had his first big hit with the release of "Lovesick Blues", and made his debut on stage at the Grand Ole Opry. The group was disbanded in 1951, but after Williams' death in 1953, they would make a return behind new frontman Ray Price.

Williams was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 for his beloved ability to sing "brutally honest songs about his life in the language of the everyman."

His vocal style was heavily influenced by blues and gospel music, transforming his poetic lyrics into full-fledged ballads. Williams has been credited as an influence on big-name artists and bands including Johnny Cash and The Beatles. However, his most notable influence was on that of his own son, Hank Williams Jr., who has since joined his father in the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2021.

Hank Williams was among the first musicians to prioritize a drumbeat in his records, but while others would have an actual drummer, Williams accomplished this by damping his guitar - hitting the strings with the palm of his hand to create a drum-like sound. He used this as a workaround for an old, unspoken rule that prohibited the use of drums within country music.

Williams' rhythmic style, influenced by blues artists of his time, eventually led to the birth and popularization of "rockabilly" - blending the sound of country music with the rhythm of blues music.
