The Importance of Moving Forward Without Looking Back by Dhanvi Patel

You are given a chance to return to any previous point in your life and change a decision you made, but you will lose everything that has happened to you since then. Is there a time you would return to? If so, would you like to retain the memory of the life you are giving up even though you could never recapture it?

Personal Growth and Learning, Value of Experience

The past has shaped us into the person we are today for the good and the not so good. Every decision we have ever made is a valuable lesson, one that we should be grateful to have. The outcomes of our past decisions have taught us the difference between right or wrong and what we should do in similar situations. Mistakes have offered us countless learning opportunities which is why they should not be undone. For example, when I overcommitted myself to too many clubs in grade 8, my behaviour changed completely. I was always exhausted, super busy and pretty frustrated. After my mom forced me to drop some clubs, I realized that instead of joining everything that comes my way, I should carefully choose and join what I am interested in. This way I am involved in school activities and I have time to spend on myself—promoting good work-life balance! Everything we have experienced—happy memories or painful moments— adds depth to our complex characters. It changes the way we perceive the world, cope with events and interact with others. Undoing these experiences would mean losing all our emotional and intellectual development. It would make our lives simple and boring.

Appreciation of the Present and Unpredictable Outcomes

As tempting as it is, by choosing not to go back in time, I am acknowledging the value of my current life. Life is unpredictable and changing a single decision doesn't guarantee a better outcome. One day you may have something but by the next day, it is gone. Overtime, I have come to realize that instead of dwelling on the things that have already happened, I should look to the future and move on. This summer, I started reflecting on whether accepting the AP Program’s offer was the right decision or not. If I was in a mainstream school, I would be able to take harder courses (eg. history) in summer school which would make my school year a lot easier. However, you are not allowed to take AP courses in the summer. This frustrated me a lot, but I came to peace with the fact that I committed to a decision, and now I am stuck with it. I even started thinking of the benefits (eg. AP exams, capstone)! So, instead of trying to rewrite our past, we should focus on the present.

Embracing Imperfection

Because life is imperfect, recognizing and appreciating those imperfections contributes to its beauty. Going back in time would mean trying to "perfect" the past, however, it is those imperfections that make life meaningful and unique. Everything that happens, happens for a reason. Instead of going back to gain a short-term benefit, we should be looking at the bigger picture.
