Pantera - Planet Caravan (cover)

https://youtu.be/kWChhdIgT6Q?feature=shared

For me, this song has a super ambient, almost haunting aura around it. This is a 1994 cover of Black Sabbath's "Planet Caravan" written and had the lead guitar part slightly improvised by Dimebag Darrell.

This song is made almost entirely of lead guitar, rhythm guitar, a bass line and occasional drum taps. The tempo of Black Sabbath's "Planet Caravan" is 90 BPM, which gives the song a slower and more ambient feel.

What it is you like about each song - guitar solo doesn't explore a range of notes within a certain scale which makes the song sound tight

The types of sounds and instruments used - guitar and effects

What the lyrics, vibe or mood of the songs mean to you? Despite the title, this is in no way about caravans, I believe it's a poetic exploration of nature and space. The vibe is quite spacy, and the mood is quite light

Floating Trees - C418

https://youtu.be/j1Z_Ihkluek?feature=shared

Yes, this is a song from a video game, more specifically Minecraft, this song is the best to flick on when i'm in any mood besides happy. It is a very effects based song, as you struggle to point out an individual instrument and is made fully of modified synthesizer's, glockenspiel like melodies (the creator of the song is from scandanavia) and rhythmic percussion. Being released in late 2013 for the game Minecraft, this song closely resembles the other songs found through the game.

What it is you like about each song - this track is instrumental, so no lyrics.

I grew up surrounded by music. My dad played guitar and piano from as early as i can remember. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Music. I remember him playing guitar to me to help me sleep. My mum is a massive music fan and there is always music in the house. My love of indie music comes from my mum. She loves live music and festivals, and is always keen for me to go to see concerts. During covid, I learned to play the guitar, starting on my mum's acoustic Fender with songs by Coldplay, the Beatles and Neil Young. Since then, I have collected a number of guitars including a Dean VX, Takomine G-Series and an Ibanez. I now play a greater range of tunes and styles, at faster speeds. My dream guitar is a Dean ML. I recently received a multi effects pedal so I can experiment with a range of sounds, as well as looping. I picked up, and fixed, a broken Marshall amp which i use daily.

(and artists) Coldplay: love their signature style, their stadium filling anthems, melodic tunes, feel like I can see colours when i listen to their music Pantera: love their eerie, gritty feel, their music is incredibly powerful Radiohead: a band both my parents love, and have developed a love for them too. Like the way they have reinvented themselves so many times, particularly enjoy their earlier work (Pablo Honey, The Bends) Mac demarco: much gentler, cheery tunes, easy listening, would love to see live, Beach House: fantastic indie band, signature sound but timeless and Alice in Chains: Pantera esque but more grungy and less aggressive

Nude by Radiohead i really like the instrumentals which makes me feel very connected to the music, Go Slowly by Radiohead as it's so different from any of their other songs (I love the haunting guitar), Insomniac by MemoBoy is a very simple track with guitar, bass and drums, plus vocals - it's repetitive but kind of hypnotic, She Falls Asleep by McFly reminds me of Bohemian Rhapsody - it builds and builds, using a range of different orchestral instruments, The Way You'd Love Her by Mac Demarco - the whole song uses open chords which give the song a kind of cheery feel

Mcbusted at Delapre Abbey when i was around 9 or 10: first taste of live music other than seeing my dad's band. Was blown away by the power of the sound, and the crowd. Went to a festival in 2023 in Hertfordshire - highlights included The Ks, Kula Shaker and General Levy. A real mix of sounds but was fascinated by the festival set-up. Turin Brakes about a year ago at Warwick Arts Centre - a raw and powerful acoustic performance which prompted me to listen to much of their work on Apple on my return home. Coldplay on my most recent birthday. This was honestly a once in a lifetime experience. We had seats pretty high up so we had a brilliant view and could enjpy literally being a part of the show as we had glow-up wristbands and moon goggles. The sound was pretty intense, I had no idea it could be that loud - i could physically feel it. I would love to see them again and hope we can get more tickets for the 2027 shows. Chris Martin's energy is incredible.

Would love to see: Radiohead, Mac Demarco, Passenger, Fleet Foxes, The Sundays (although they won't tour again), Alice in Chains

Musical composition is a mixture of both the building of the piece and the finished song itself. A proper composition is when someone is involved in arrangements to the rhythm, harmony and melody throughout the song. The one who does these arrangements is the composer.

The song "Everlong" by the Foo Fighters is already an emotion wrenching song as it is, so for Dave Grohl to perform acoustically for Howard Stern in 1999. This song is already sad enough as it is, talking about an all-powerful and spiritual love, spoken through dave grohls whispering lyrics into the mic giving a sense of mystery and intimacy to the listener. In this 25 year old clip, Dave is playing an acoustic version of the song on a Gibson Hummingbird, accompanied by no other instruments. This gives the song an even more meaningful display of arrangement, from just his voice and guitar. This lets the listener hear each individual part clearly and individually.

So far in the course, i feel like i'm getting very used to the practical music production in itself. I find myself on bandlabs and the unpaid trial of FL in my free time making beats outside of college. Besides this, musical theory is something which a lot of people dislike but i have always been interested in, as i come from more of a musical performance side compared to production which was a completely new thing to me at the start of the year.

Not much to improve besides general knowledge of the course compared to people in their second or third year of music. The friend group ive sunk my way into has a few people in it with alot of production experience, so naturally i feel the urge to catch up with them in what they know.

Since starting i've learned how to store musical equipment correctly and safely, setting up musical equipment, how to use, how to make tracks in a DAW, how to use tools in Logic pro, how to Loop, bus, track stack, splice, trim and how to complete and master tracks in DAWs.

Besides being told off the occasional time, i am loving the course mainly the hands on practical side of it and is a breath of fresh air compared to my previous 2 years of college.
