"At the great judgement day," whispered the minister--and, strangely enough, the sense that he was a professional teacher of the truth impelled him to answer the child so. "Then, and there, before the judgment seat, thy mother, and thou, and I, must stand together. But the daylight of this world shall not see our meeting!"(Hawthorne, 150).

This quote from Dimmesdale is basically stating that when they are judged by God that everything will be known. But, until then, they can hide their secrets from the light of day.

On page 52, Hawthorne had written that Hester and her baby were taken out of their prison cell and taken up to the scaffold to stand there up until an hour past twelve. On the scaffold, it was a place of judgment and exposure. The town wanted her to confess her baby's fathers name. This was an example of the day symbol due to her having to stand up on the platform with her baby wearing the scarlet letter 'a', totally exposed to everyone.

On page 250, Hawthorne discusses that Dimmesdale had found his way to the scaffold to reveal his secret. The reader came to find out that this event happened at noon in broad daylight. Dimmesdale exposed his mark to show his guilt to not only the town, but God. His secret was known, no longer hidden.

Although I was unable to find an article on neither Gale Databases nor EBSCO Information Service, I found a few sources to help me find my information needed for this project. One can learn that the symbol for exposure is daylight. As well as Dimmesdale knew he could not reveal his guilt during the night, it must be in broad daylight.
