The Lowell Girls were hired from nearby farms to work in factories. The Lowell Girls were young adults. The girls would work for a couple years before returning home. The girls made an important impact on America's economy. Most of the Lowell Girls sent their wages home to their families. The majority of the Lowell Girls parents hesitated to let their daughters work in the mills.

Jethro Wood made an iron plow with changeable parts. John Deere wanted to improve the idea, so he came up with the idea with a lightweight steel plow. The earlier plows made of iron or wood, pulled by an oxen were slow but very strong.

The government bought a lot of guns, so Whitney wanted to go to Washington D.C to share his idea of the interchangeable parts for muskets. In the beginning the officials laughed at his plan. Whitney tried even harder to sell his idea, and when he showed the officials his idea by changing the parts of 10 muskets, they loved his plan. In 1798 Whitney made muskets in the factory to rely on his interchangeable parts. Soon, Whitney's idea of interchangeable parts spread rapidly. Inventors designed machines that produced interchangeable parts for locks, clocks, and many other items.

Boys and girls often started working when they were 7 years old in the 1800's. Small children were useful in the factories because they could fit through big machines to change spindles. Farm children worked hard in the 1800's. At the time a lot of people didn't see a difference in having kids work on a farm or in a factory, but now people think its cruel to have children as young as seven working. Often, the child's wages were used to help their families.
