The Program in Science, Technology, and Society (STS) aims to provide students with an interdisciplinary framework through which to understand the complex interactions of science, technology and the social world. After working through a common core of courses drawn from the social sciences, the humanities, the natural and physical sciences and engineering.

Engineering/Science/Technology students could take an STS major.

Engineering and science are important majors which could make our society better

Engineering projects and design directly impact society. Whether the impact on society is discussed during the design process or not, there will be an affect for the positive or the negative. Ideally, we want engineers to understand this connection and understand their implications and duty to society. This all ties in to what we have been talking about in class in terms of requiring engineering students to take social justice and ethics classes.

In order to connect engineering/science to society or in order to find some common ground between engineers and non-engineers, I feel like engineers should be able to be transparent about their work, to communicate efficiently, to discuss their thoughts in a way others understand. If those criteria are met, there is so many things that connect those two worlds, as engineers' work serves society, improves technologies, etc.

They are connected, but taught as if they are not.

Similar to what today's readings mention, programs in STEM often devalue teachings in the humanities, and even when they are included in some way, students have a limited uptake of the ideas.

What an engineer/scientist does can better or harm society. What society requires/does influences what the engineer does.

Society affects demand/need for technologies, advancements, products, etc. to be created. In a cyclical fashion, things that engineers/scientists make can affect society in both positive and negative ways.
