I respectfully acknowledge that the land I live, play, and work on is on the Unceded Traditional Territory of the K’ómoks First Nation, the traditional keepers of this land. I appreciate the natural beauty that envelops this land. As my family recently moved to this area, I need to take responsibility for learning about the rich history of the K’ómoks First Nation. When on the land, I internalize how I respectfully acknowledge the ancestors of this land, by stating that I come in peace meaning no harm to the people and this land.

To be honest I don't know a lot of my family's history. To start, I know that my great grandparents on my Dad's side moved from Prussia and purchased farmland in eastern Saskatchewan, 7 miles away from a small town called Stornaway. I am not close with my parents, I would be considered the black sheep of the family. So there is a lot of family history that I would love to know about, unfortunately given the current circumstances I don't think that will happen.

I also don't know about my mother's side, as I lost my grandpa when I was 5 or so. The only memory of my grandfather is that whenever we visited he always shook my hand. I was told later in life that I skated like him as I played hockey in the same small town that he lived and played hockey in. I lost my grandmother when I was in university and didn't yet have that interest in my roots, so I feel stories or information is lost to me. It was talking to my great uncle that mentioned that his family came from Whitby , England, and one day I would like to go and visit.

I grew up in a small town and attended the Lutheran Church, was baptized, attended Sunday School, and that confirmation process. I attended a Catholic High School and was exposed to a more serious version of Christianity than I was used to. Throughout high school, I felt like an outsider looking in, I didn't focus too much on the differences between being Lutheran and the Catholic faith, but I felt different and couldn't talk to anyone about it. As I grew older I stopped going to Church, questioned my beliefs more often, and struggled with was I believed in. While attending University, I found out that a priest at the Catholic church that was tied to the school I attended was brought up on chargers. This had a major impact on my faith. Years later, I had the opportunity to visit Vatican City. This was a great experience, but it also hurt my faith. It was so over the top and the money that went into that place, I have a hard time thinking that it couldn't have been used in a more meaningful manner. It is worth billions of dollars and yet every service and mass, the church expects its money from attendees. This doesn't make sense to me.

Hockey, our national sport, and the dream of many kids to score the game-winning goal in game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final. As more news comes out, it is hard to ignore that our beloved national sport is flawed and has a lot of work to do to repair the damage of sweeping alleged sexual assaults under the carpet. It will take time but there will be more stories like this coming out. This isn't anything new to a lot of people, people inside the hockey world. I played hockey and was a decent player, but as a teenager, I heard about the stories that went along with rookie iniations, and the way coaches treated players. I have a couple of kids who did play hockey and I even coached for a bit, but I am glad that they didn't take to it, as it would be hard for me to support an organization like this right now.

Well, I completed the my supports lesson as I felt that it fit in well with my Careers class. Well there was a few surprises in the Class Profile, and I guessed there was a few surprises with completing this activity too. The My Supports activity showed that there are a few students who didn't have 5 supports, and those students would be the ones who are not just struggling in school, but with this phase in their life right now.

Connection with FPPL:

Learning involves generational roles and responsibilities.

Learning requires exploration of one‘s identity.

Connection with NCN/ Indigenous ways of knowing:

Learning involves generational roles and responsibilities

People help each other each day and every day. In NCN way of life there is a word meaning to help one another. This is a teaching taken very seriously.

Connection to the Pathways Focus Areas:

Community Approach

Culture and Language

Safe and Healthy Schools

Personal and Social Responsibility

Communication

How did it go? What did I learn?

The lesson went well, most of my students could fill the 8 areas with people who support them. There were a couple of students who struggled to fill in 3 people. I need to constantly remind myself that students struggle and should be there to support them as well as be their teacher.

What would I do differently?

I teach in an art room, so all I have are tables, which doesn't bode well for individual work with grade eights. I feel doing this individually like the lesson suggests would have been a better outcome, it was just students ended up comparing their lists, which then turned into complaining about some of there supports. Not all students did this, but some did. Everything else worked well except for that one piece.

I would also spend more time on the key concept and the big idea. I don't know the a lot about the Nuu-chah-nulth, so I felt like we should of spent more time on that aspect.

What will I do next?

I will browse the Pathway Lesson plans and pick another one to try.
