I want students to learn to like math. Ryan and Cooper (2013) state that students sometimes fail to see how math relates to their lives outside of school. I want to change that by presenting them with real-world situations and problems.

My students are going to be sixth graders. They’re usually 10-11 years old, transitioning from late childhood to adolescence, which is when they think more abstractly, idealistically, and logically (Santrock, 2014). Santrock (2014) also states that they process information faster and sustain their attention longer. This seems like the perfect time to develop students’ appreciation for math. I think most students are auditory and visual learners, and they learn from experience.

Instructional strategies: Technology is constantly used in the classroom, specifically calculators. However, students are now also using computers. There are websites that students use in class that allow them to practice solving word problems. It’s an enjoyable way for students to learn while having fun. I could introduce new topics, like solving word problems and fractions, by using computer games. Students also learn from experience; so, giving them problems they can relate to will enhance their understanding and their interest. Cooperative learning is a useful strategy to use so students can work together to figure out the answers to problems. I would assign a group project in which they are given a budget and they need to figure out how to furnish a room without going over that budget. They would use the group investigation strategy to assign different tasks for each student.

My teaching strategy corresponds with the Progressivism approach, in which students are encouraged to plan and carry out activities and research projects using group processes and democratic procedures. The curriculum is centered on students’ interests in real problems, and students learn by doing and by discovering (Ryan & Cooper, 2013).

To assess students at the entry-level I will introduce the topic with a warm-up. They will answer in their journals, and then we will discuss the answers as a class. To monitor their progress, I will ask questions during the lesson and they will have homework. They would then have a quiz at the end of each lesson to assess their understanding of each topic.
