I think lesson planning is a vital piece and acts as a map that shows progress towards our goals. I do think that a lot of the basic lesson categories don't have to be written out unless you have very little experience. Many decisions can be made in the moment.

I've never written objectives in a SMART way; I use and teach my students to use the ABCD model (audience, behavior (from Bloom's), context, degree). The ABCD model shares a lot of similarities with the SMART model, but I like how the SMART model forces the objective writer to look at the relevance and attainability of the objective. I also think that writing good objectives comes from a lot of practice and trial and error. I also liked the distinction between equity and equality. It's something we talk about a lot in my class as students start to notice differences between the students in their placements and come up with how to make learning more accessible and equitable for them.

I agree with this. I tell my students that we have to learn how to write long lesson plans until it becomes second nature to include all of the essential elements. I don't physically write out the accommodations I'm making - I just do them. I also have learned how to be flexible in the moment. I have a few different formative assessment strategies I use, even though they're not written down anywhere. To me, it's more important to follow the students' leads based on what they're showing they know/can do than it is to make sure you've executed your lesson plan perfectly. I try to help my students see this as well, but sometimes it's hard for them to be flexible, as they lack the experience needed to make changes on the fly.

The SMART concept is the most important idea I can retain from the webinar. I believe utilizing this concept can prepare educators to develop successful lessons. Many times lesson can be too long or technical just for the sake of looking attractive or trying to impress the reviewing administrator. However, the goal of the lesson is to provide effective instruction to the student that specific, measurable, achievable, relative, and timely. As an educator if I can base my lessons specifically on this acronym, I believe I will be more successful with students rather than developing lessons that look good on paper, but don't benefit the students learning objectives.

As a substitute teacher, I am challenged to give the lesson plans to my students that day and make sure students succeed with those assignments. But I am also challenged by the “hidden curriculum.” When a guest teacher is in a classroom, students are expected to act a certain way. They are expected to be respectful to the guest teacher and follow the classroom norns. Some days, I find myself focusing more on the “hidden curriculum” than the daily lesson plan.

Many teachers are pulled in so many directions today. All teachers need to make sure they are delivering their curriculum for their students and we need to do this in a way that students will be engaged! There are so many factors to think about when you are doing this. In talking with other educators I believe so many of us feel that time is a factor when thinking about creating lesson plans. There are SO many things for teachers to do when they are "in front of kids". That thorough lesson planning sometimes doesn't get the time it deserves and NEEDS. I wish that lesson planning could be done collaboratively to help save time.

I think lesson planning is necessary for many things, but especially organization. It is important to have everything written out to be certain that standards and objectives have been reached and nothing has been overlooked. While I may not enjoy lesson planning, it always feels better when I have everything set out for the week and I know what I need to be prepared for each day.

The biggest concept I feel is worth holding onto is the SMART learning objectives. If students know what they are learning, how they will demonstrate their level of understanding and why/how it will relate to the real world I feel the buy in for them to want to learn and be engaged will be much higher. Students want to know why they need to learn each concept/skill and the specific clearly written objectives will help with that.

I've learned that I can write a SMART goal pretty easily for my students IEPs but looking back at when I had my pull-out classes in previous districts I didn't do the best job of having clear learning objectives. I knew in my head what I wanted as the outcome but never clearly provided that to the students to help them master the concepts.

I don't necessarily have a question but am two years removed from writing plans for my pull-out classes and feel that if I had to write plans right now I know without a doubt I would not be doing my best work. I would really have to assess what is working and what's not working to make sure I meet the needs of my students. I feel I would be overwhelmed and frustrated for awhile because my plans wouldn't be "perfect."

Lesson planning provides a path for teachers to guide students to mastery on concepts being taught while laying out clearly what is needed, expected, and the reason students need to know the specific information. It is the roadmap to get students from point A to the destination in as much of an orderly fashion as possible but remembering that there will be detours and traffic jams as the journey down the map unfolds.

I think lesson planning has become easier with the use of Google and shared documents/apps so it is much easier to collaborate with co-workers in like subject areas. With the use of technology and platforms like Planbook lesson plans can be clearly laid out with the standards and can also be adjusted as needed based on student progress.
