In these Blogs I will be reflecting on the expirence of collaborating and performing in ‘IN A SUIT, OF COURSE’. I will be reflecting on my roles within the project and what I did to prepare for rehearsals and the final performance.

My Role as a Collaborator

One role I had within the creation process, was a collaborator, Ty (the choreographer) took an approach that included setting tasks that would guide the creation of movement from the dancers.

In the beginning stages of creating, Ty set different improvisational scores that played with the idea of being in an office. from these improvisational scores, Ty asked us to create characters, they used an interdisplinary approach by skiing us to draw and create character cards.

My character was inspired by my first job as an office cleaner, I was particularly inspired by the feeling of being tangled in the wires of a hoover.

In conclusion, the experience as a whole was in reply positive, feel as though as a group we created a safe environment where there was both fun and productivity. I am incredibly inspired by Ty’s method of guiding the creation of the piece and collaboration with the dancers. I feel as though I learnt many methods of managing myself as a performer that I will continue into my future projects within the Unit.

My Role as a Collaborator

From these characters that were created, we were then asked to choreograph solos that introduced our characters into the space. Ty’s creative vision was to look at the idea of magical realism ‘narrative strategy that is characterized by the matter-of-fact inclusion of fantastic or mythical elements into seemingly realistic fiction’ Magic realism (2024) Encyclopædia Britannica, when creating the solo I looked at exploring an aspect of the character I had created, that could be a real life situation (being tangled in a wire) and developing it into movement that would not appear in real life. In the solo I looked at becoming tangled in my own body parts and invisible wires, throughout the rehearsal process Ty would add developments to the solo and suggestions such as ‘make it ugly’ which I would apply to create almost contortion like poses.

In reflection I see my role as a collaborator as being a mould to Ty’s vision, my role was to understand the themes and goals that Ty had and then to embody it to create movement that fitted the piece.
