Most of the people were children but there were some adults too. Out of all the children she saved, none of them were reunited with their parents because their parents were killed. In 1965, she was awarded Righteous Among the Nations. Although the exact date is unknown sometime around the year 2000 Irena was awarded the Most Distinguished Social Worker. She received the Order of the White Eagle in 2003. The Order of the White Eagle is Poland's highest honor. She had an entire team of about 20 people helping her do this. This heroic story of Irena Sendler has been made into lots of movies and books. The Warsaw Ghetto opened in November 1940. The ghetto was enclosed by a wall that was over 10 feet high, topped with barbed wire, and closely guarded. The ghetto's extreme overcrowding, minimal rations, and unsanitary conditions led to disease, starvation, and the death of thousands of Jews each month. 83,000 Jews died of starvation and disease. The population of the ghetto was estimated to be over 400,000 Jews.
