Was born on 4 September (August 23, old style), 1877 on the farm of Pikšas in (pagasts Udzes) Courland province(near the present city Dobele) in the family of prosperous peasants of Indriķis and Lisey. In the family — third son.

In 1886-1889 he studied at the district school, 1889 — in the Alexander city school in Mitau (now Jelgava). Since 1895 he studied at the city real school, but in 1896 he left the studies. In the fall went to East Prussia, where in 1897 he finished 6-month course dairy in Tapiau (now Kaliningrad)
