A few months ago my dad showed me how he cooks rice. It seemed like magic before, and then he gave me the behind-the-scenes tour and it still seemed like magic. Basically, you rinse the rice a few times in a strainer until the water comes out mostly clear. (Sometimes we cook white rice, sometimes brown rice.) Next you take out the rice cooker and you put the rice in it. Then you add the liquid. We usually add coconut milk because according to my dad the coconut rice gets eaten at approximately 4 times the speed as rice made with plain water (at least in our family). Once the rice and liquid are inside, you just close the lid on the machine and press "start" and then about an hour later the thing beeps out a melody and you can eat it (the rice, not the cooker). That's basically it. My parents cook rice all the time for dinner, sort of as a default base to go with whatever else we're eating, so they love the convenience of the rice cooker. It's not exactly cooking-show-worthy though, so I'm excited to learn about some other more interesting ways to prepare the stuff.

Something my family eats a lot is fried rice and we love making it. Fried rice originated from China originally and even though I have no Chinese descent my grandma used to love making fried rice so we make it very often. We like to try out new recipes but the basics we always use are vegetables (carrots are my favorite), soy sauce, and eggs usually.

This is cong you bing, or scallion pancake. It is a well-known dish from Southern China (also a popular street food). It is pretty easy to make since it only takes flour, water, oil, and some scallions. My family would make these at home once in a while and it is one of my favorite childhood "dough" foods.
