In 2012 Federal authorities launched an investigation after The Washington Post reported that flawed forensics hair matches might have led to the convictions of hundreds of potentially innocent people since at least the 1970's. Richard Beranek was living 130 miles away from and had no ties to the community. He was considered a suspect because laws enforcement thought Beranek resembled a composite sketch of the suspect in the rape case. The women picked Beranek out of a group of photos and picked him out of a live lineup. She was almost certain is was him. Later on FBI analyst Wayne Oakes concluded that a hair found in the underwear left by the rapist was a "match" to Beranek's hair. At the time of this analysis the FBI knew microscopic hair comparison had limitations. Even multiple witnesses testified that Beranek was hundreds of miles away.
