The tone of the opening scene is essential to the story for two reasons. The first reason is the hook of a story to keep the reader to keep reading. The second reason is it sets the setting of the story. The scene is a hallway with two guards protecting it. With the tone being scary, it could foreshadow an event.

The guards are keeping watch to protect from danger, but also from ghosts. They claimed that they had seen a ghost while on duty. This may be foreshadowing evil and danger coming, as well as the protagonist being haunted.

The atmosphere in act 1, scene 1 of Hamlet is one of suspense and tension. The setting of the castle's ramparts at night, the appearance of the ghost, and Horatio's discussion of omens contribute to the sense of mystery and unease. The fact that young Fortinbras is marching an army towards Denmark adds to the scene's tension.
