Padlet

This page was created with Padlet, this is a canvas-type digital pinboard that can be edited by any user it is shared with. It is a great method to gather ideas, feedback, questions etc., from students both synchronously and asynchronously. It is a great tool for a whole range of uses.

The UoP is going to have a site licence for Padlet soon, in the meantime you can make your own account. More info in this video.

Nearpod

Nearpod is an online power-point like slide maker but with much more interactive content. It is best for making slides with integrated quizzes and other activities for live online sessions, although it can be used asynchronously too. The great thing about Nearpod is that the students can follow along with the slides on their own screen, so you do not need to show them though WebEx (see example here). It is also great for showing videos in a synchronous online session. The main problem with Nearpod is that the University only has 300 licences. Email elearn@port.ac.uk or Tom Langston for access. H5P

This is a tool that allows a huge array of interactive learning activities that is embedded in Moodle. It works best if you embed the activities into a Moodle Book (see below). You access H5P through your Moodle page and the 'add activity button'.

Vevox

Vevox is an application that can be used to embed quizzes and audience participation and chat
in both live face to face, online and asynchronous sessions. For more info see this video.
The UoP is going to have a site licence for Vevox (coming soon), in the meantime you can make your own account.

Google Meet/ WebEx/ Zoom

A great way to get students to interact in online live sessions is to make 'break out rooms' where a small groups of students can meet separate to the big group. The way this might work in a live session, is for example if you are using WebEx to host a discussion session, you can then pre arrange google meet sessions, make a list of topics for each 'room' or you could split the students alphabetically (e.g. A-C go to this google meet). The students can then go into the google meet and chat about a discussion topic for a pre-defined length of time. Have a meet back time for everyone to rejoin the main meeting. Zoom has a good function for doing this all within the same meeting (and we *might* be getting a University Zoom licence).

Moodle book

This is a standard tool on Moodle that allows you to add in multiple elements to form a coherent learning activity, for example you could embed video content, Moodle quizzes, H5P activities and questions. I would recommend that you use a Moodle Book to organise your asynchronous content for each week. Here are some videos about introduction and advanced Moodle functionality.

Panopto

Panopto is the main platform that the university is recommending for recording all video content. Panopto is great for recording lectures and short video content and linking video and powerpoints.
The videos are stored on the cloud and can be easily embedded into Moodle and other platforms, this means no need to store and upload big files (yey!). Help videos can be found here. There are lots of other interactive tools you can use on Panopto as demonstrated in this video (and many others online).
VIDEO EDITING:
I have found that the editing capabilities of Panopto are quite poor, it is not proper video editing software, it is much better for recording. If you need to edit video content recorded on a phone, camera or go-pro (for instance for a virtual field trip) it would be better to use Camtasia (see below) to edit the content.

Camtasia

USE IF YOU WANT TO DO PROPER VIDEO EDITING
Camtasia is far superior to Panopto for video editing. You can easily edit, trim, cut, stitch sound, annotate, add images, animations and music with Camtasia.
Not clear if the UoP is going to continue supporting this. I also find it challenging to use off-site on my laptop
Camtasia videos are able to be imported into Panopto

Google Earth Web

I have been doing some research into how to make virtual field trips and Google Earth Web version seems the easiest option. It is fairly intuitive to add locations, video content and text which can be presented to students as a coherent activity. For more info on HOW see resources below or email me. Example Blue Ridge Mountains and an induction field trip I have made below. For both click 'Present' to start.

Kahoot

I use this a lot in live face to face sessions for doing interactive quizzes during lectures. You make the questions, set the quiz and then students can answer on their devices using a code. This is similar to Vevox, but has much more of a school-focus so is a bit more child-centred.

These tools are useful for asynchronous learning on Moodle.

Most useful: Moodle book containing integrated video clip content, activities ("scaffolding") via H5P and Moodle tools. Padlet is a great non-Moodle resource for collaboration and feedback.

Basic video recording (not recommended)

Record function in Moodle (basic, but easy- especially for weekly introduction videos but only allows you one take and you have to re-record any mistakes)

You can upload your own videos to Youtube. I have my own account that I use to upload videos from my phone, I then either put these as public videos or unlisted. If they are unlisted then the viewer can only access them from a link (and they are not searchable). This is a great way to store videos to be embedded into Moodle, virtual fieldtrips etc., E.g. this is my youtube channel

Facebook

Make a facebook page for your course and then you can make groups for each year group to chat. See example for geology course here.

These tools are great for active learning during live online or face to face sessions, but they can also be used for asynchronous activities (although H5P or Moodle tools probably better for that- column 1)

Moodle template

This has been automatically added to all Moodle pages, the content is organised by week. You should write an introduction or (even better) record a video introducing the learning activities for each week. There are then categorised elements to fill in including (1) Self directed (lecture content, slides, quizzes, Moodle books etc.,), (2) Collaboration (details of face to face or online live sessions). For more detail see this video.

ArcGIS Online (AGOL)

UoP site licensed and accessed via UoP log-in.
AGOL is a platform for creating spatial online content. This ranges from data to maps and 3D scenes, as well as building web content platforms to use those maps in. AGOL is user-friendly, with web interfaces for creation tools, although data, maps and scenes can also be authored in ArcGIS Pro. This platform allows creating resources that can be built on your own spatial data.
I cannot replicate the fantastic content of Catherine's GE example, but here are a few examples I created in an hour or so. Apart from the Dominica example all others are based on the same map.
The following examples require sign in to AGOL, although data can be made public. Access control is a strength of AGOL.
