When using the signs >, <, and =, a strong foundation is needed in the understanding of what these signs represent. When introducing these signs to children we want to make sure they have a strong understanding of what each sign represents so when they try to apply them in comparing whole numbers there will be no difficulty.

2. Gaining Understanding Regarding Numbers Values

In order for the students to start applying these signs when comparing numbers, they need to have a good understanding of the values of the numbers. For the children to be able to place the correct sign in between the two numbers, they need a strong understanding of WHY the sign is where it is. Being able to distinguish whether or not one number has a higher numerical value is most important when starting the comparison of whole numbers.

3. Implementing Both Strategies

Now that the student's have a base understanding of the values of numbers and the equality signs, they can started putting the two together. First, working with numbers from 1-10 is going to be good for starting out the comparisons as those numbers are going to be most familiar to the children. Making sure that the student's skills in both of the last steps is crucial to the success of the children in this area. Using activities such as magnet boards, tactile activities, and books are great ways of engaging the student's in different ways.
