I was quite scared when i heard of database. And with the slide and other videos i studied i quite didnt get a firm understanding. But thanks to the video from class though i couldnt login because i had issues joing the class, but after watching the class video im really excited to learn more because the understanding now is perfectly well. I have come to realize that, traditional file system is also a computer based. Which i thought it was just a paper data work. I have also come to know that there is less data consistency in traditional file system. But database is more data consistency because of the process of normalization.
Im looking forward to learning more about this program and more of the terms as well.

Theophilus Arthur Gborsong I'm very glad to offer this course this semester. At first, I thought the database system was a kind of hard disk or server where information was stored. I have come to realise that, it is a record keeping and retrieval system. I hope to develop a database system for my school after pursuing this course because my school has been using the traditional system of record keeping for a very longtime

I have been using MySQL hence I knew the concepts, SQL queries, etc. little did I know that MySQL type of databases is a relational database that succeed the traditional file system. In fact, I just came across the traditional file system during the unit one lesson.
Now I understand why the relational database came to replace the traditional file system. The relational database makes it easy to prevent multiple entries (redundancy), makes insert and update of data very easy. It also makes it easier to link one database to multiple applications. All these were lacking in the traditional file system. I look forward to learning and knowing more about relational databases and how to create and manage them in other database management systems other than MYSQL.

Prior to this lecture, the knowledge I had about the difference between the traditional file system and database was that with the name traditional, traditional file system was the manual filing system with the paper and pen way of collecting data and information while the database was the computerized method of collecting data and information.
Now it is clear to me that Traditional file system is a computerized method of storing and arranging computer files and the information in the file (data). A situation where each department stores its data and information by preventing other departments from having access to it. i.e not correlated and integrated.

Looking forward to get enough knowledge about database in this course because in my eco-system where we are using traditional file system, the leadership of the school is planning to switch to database and that will be my task as the I.T personnel.

Traditionally, data was organized in file formats. DBMS makes it possible to overcome the deficiencies in traditional style of data management. A modern DBMS has the following characteristics

A modern DBMS is more realistic and uses real-world entities to design its architecture. It uses the behaviour and attributes too. For example, a school database may use students as an entity and their age as an attribute.

DBMS allows entities and relations among them to form tables. A user can understand the architecture of a database just by looking at the table names.

DBMS follows the rules of normalization, which splits a relation when any of its attributes is having redundancy in values. Normalization is a mathematically rich and scientific process that reduces data redundancy.

The traditional filing system (TFS) stores and arrange computer files. Basically, it organizes these files into a database for the storage, manipulation and retrieval by users. This is usually carried out on an individual's dedicated machine.

TFS stores data of an organization is a group of file

TFS files carrying data are independent of each other. This is because each department stores its own data independent of other departments.

Each file contains data for some specific area or department independent of the other departments. The department does not share data and hence there is a lack of data integrity and lots of data redundancy.

In the traditional file system data is easily retrieved in that individual data in constrained to work on a specific or a dedicated database.

Files on the computer can easily be edited without affecting other files in the institution or department.

However, there is a high rate of Data Redundancy in the TFS: It is possible that the same information may be duplicated in different files. This leads to data redundancy results in memory wastage and data replication.

Data Inconsistency: Because of data redundancy, it is possible that data may not be an inconsistent state.

Accessing data may turn out to be difficult since data is not shared and are stored independently.

In conclusion, I think the database system will be the option I will go for. i have learnt that DBMS is the best option to go rather that the TFS. Data needs to be shared to avoid data redundancy. wasted of data and possibly to avoid data inconsistency and increase reliability.

Collins Mbrah
ED/ITD/19/0015

Sorry Doctor.
