1. Explain the Effects of extreme Temperature (both night and day) on a body in the desert.

During the day temperatures can get very extremely hot. This can make people sweat a lot which would get them dehydrated faster, but keep their body temperature down. The body could shut down if it loses too much water during sweating. At night in the desert temps are the exact opposite. They can be below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. It would stop their perspiration and cool them down if they were stuck during the day. It can revive them like it did for Andrew Hughes in the book. But it can get so cold that you start to shiver and lose energy. So then you would have to find someplace warm to stay

2. Explain how the human body systems work to both insulate and cool to and maintain body temperature.

The body insulates itself by shivering. This can create warmth by using energy and muscles that produce heat when used. The body also can use fat to insulate itself. To keep cooled off the body perspires and when that sweat evaporates it releases energy cooling you off.

3. Describe the strategies Mauro Prosperi used to survive in the desert. How did he meet his energy needs?

He first waited for people to come and find him while waiting in one spot. That didn't work to then he had to act on his own. He searched for shelter and found that there were bats there that he killed and drank the blood of because he was hungry and thirsty. He also traveled at the two coolest times of the day: when the sun is rising and going down. At night he would dig a hole to preserve heat while he was asleep.

4. Explain the role stress and the body's response to stress play in keeping a person alive in an extreme environment. Mention at least two body systems.

The brain realizes that the body is stressed it puts extra energy throughout the body then the body can react in many ways. Adrenaline is produced by the adrenal glands in the endocrine system which can help someone survive abnormal conditions. It would probably keep them awake or alert and ready to react to something dangerous. The nervous system also plays a role. It helps the body to react quickly to situations. Basically stress gives people fast reflexes in a dangerous situation.

5. Explain the role of Mauro's fitness level played in his survival. How were his body systems "trained" to handle the stress?

His fitness level helped him by three main things. One is that his respiratory system was made to be very efficient at using every breath properly. Because when you run you use lots of oxygen, and because he was a trained marathon runner his respiratory system was trained very well to use the oxygen it was provided with which in turn dropped his heart rate. Two is that his body used his energy he had stored very efficiently. Three is that his digestive system was trained as well to use every part of everything he ate efficiently and the little that he did eat was able to last him a whole day.

6. Write what you believe to be the "Top 5" rules for staying healthy in the desert.

Number 1 is to make sure you have protection from the elements, mainly the sun. If you are lost in the desert with no tent, not proper clothing, and no sunglasses you could suffer lifelong effects depending on how long you are there. So have things like long sleeves, tents, and something to cover your face when a sandstorm comes. Number 2 is to never travel alone. This should really be a rule for when you go anywhere because if you have that extra person with you its all the more supplies they are carrying and they might have things you don't. Also so you don't go crazy when all you see is sand for days on end. Number 3 is to make sure you have water. If you don't have a sufficient water source, whether it be bottled water or some kind of oasis, you will dry up in about 3 days. You body needs water for metabolic processes to happen and for your body to rid of waste so your blood doesn't carry around waste to all your organs with the possibility of those getting infected then. Number 4 is to never travel at the peak of the day. This is when the sun is the most hot and you will probably sweat out any water your body has left so you will become more tired and more dehydrated faster. Number 5 is to make sure you have proper first aid supplies. You never know if some kind of animal will attack you or if you trip and hurt yourself, or if a sandstorm knocks something into you. If you have the proper equipment you shouldn't have too much of a problem. If you don't have the equipment you are screwed because there is nothing but sand in the desert and you can't make band aids or splints out of sand

7. You are able to bring one average size backpack with you on your expedition in the desert. Explain what you would pack and why.

I would bring around 3 or 4 bottles of water. In case you get lost and can't find your way out. Secondly I would bring a flare. If a helicopter, plane, or car goes by you you can light the flare and maybe they'll see you if you get lost. Third I would bring a satellite phone. Again if you get lost then you can hopefully call someone so they can call the authorities and send a search party for you. Fourth I would bring a tent. In the middle of the day if a sandstorm comes you have protection and at night you have protection from the extreme cold. Lastly I would bring sunscreen. The heat and constant sun bearing down on your can be detrimental to your health. If the sun gets bad enough it can get you can get 2nd or 3rd degree burns which can have lifelong and lasting effects.
