This passage stood out because I can make a connection as I’m aware of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, which happened on December 7, 1941. Additionally, this resulted in the U.S getting involved in WWII, resulting in an allied victory, which is great for Michael, and the world’s sake.

I chose this passage as it illustrates how normal people had to make horrific choices to survive during the Holocaust. This passage is significant because it shows the fact that only 120 people could stay in the Ghetto in Zarki, and Israel Bornstein, with the help of his council, would have to choose who is sent away to Nazi concentration camps.

I chose this passage because it highlights a key detail in the story, that detail being that the Allied forces are nearing Michael’s location. This quote is severely important as the Soviet Allies nearing Auschwitz end up being the same that save Michael’s life.

I chose this passage as the brutality stood out to me. After reading the entire book, this is one of the few memorable sections in the story that I can clearly recall. This passage additionally stands out as it shows the brutality and disregard for life many Nazi soldiers supported during the Holocaust. I wonder if the majority of German soldiers treated others this way.

I chose this quote from Michael’s father because it’s just one example of the risks he was willing to take to keep his family and community safe. This quote from him stands out as it shows how he’s willing to take a serious risk, bribing the S.S soldiers, which could get him or his whole family killed if he was denied. I wonder If there were any scenarios where his bribes were denied and he was punished for his attempt.

I chose this passage because it foreshadows later events, and even details an example of irony, if observed closely. This stands out amongst other sections of the book because it foreshadows later that Ruth will become a devout Catholic, dedicated to her religion. Irony is shown when Ruth’s beliefs, despite Uncle Sam being against her staying with Catholics, end up saving the family from additional torment later in the story.

I chose this quote because it illustrates how Officer Schmitt still has some compassion left in him. This quote stands out because Officer Schmitt, despite being so intimidating and ruthless, still felt good enough to relocate Michael’s family to a safer location. I wonder what happened to Officer Schmitt after the Holocaust.

I chose this quote from Michael’s mother as it shows how she didn’t give up hope and she thought of Michael and his safety every day. This quote from her stands out as she ends her quote by saying “You’re a survivor,” an act of symbolism that most likely inspired the title of the book.

I chose this passage as it is one of the most important sections in the book. For most of his time in Auschwitz, Michael was thinking of his mother, and now he is finally reunited with her. This passage stands out because Michael seems unknowing whether or not to believe that this lady is truly his mother, but he finally realizes it is her.

I chose this quote because it is a sad, yet happy reunion with Michael’s family member, Aunt Hilda. This quote from Michael stands out because he’s attempting to make sense of everything, and he’s willing to find any excuse to see his mother, even if it means mistaking his family member for her.
