#1: Common School

Before common school was established, only certain groups were privileged to have general education; which even some parents needed to pay for their children's education. After the American Revolution, basic education was recognized as a natural right for all citizens to obtain. Today now, not only is it a basic right, but mandatory for youth to attend public education institutions. To me this is ranked first since this is the start of education available to all. I do not think it is appreciated enough that it is a privilege to receive education in order to develop our cognitive skills, language skills, and even how to act as civilized person in the states. Without common school, many other institutions that make the country it is today would have not been developed.

#3: Progressive Education Association

This association was important in establishing and reforming education to further advance how students how are educated in educational institutions. Some were pretty interesting proposals such as the teacher being a guide, not a taskmaster (to promote critical thinking) and the school and home must meet the student educational needs. I ranked this next since as I am going along my observation hours, I see these principles coming into practice for the students to succeed and strive in their learning development. There are activities outside of just lecture and students just taking notes; all students are engaged hands on and group discussions. The teachers I observe make sure parents are contacted in order for students to stay on task with learning and doing assignments at home. Schools may not follow all principles, but introduced ideas that work well for students and educators.

#2 Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka

African American communities struggled in have the same rights as other American citizens. They struggled in having to go to separate bathrooms, separate seating on the bus, and even separate schools for white and non-white students. After the decision made from the Supreme Court in Brown vs Board of education, segregated schools were no longer allowed to segregated schools to exist as this violated the fourteenth amendment. This lead to the integration of white and non-white students to avoid any disadvantages in student learning. I ranked this as second since this follows with common school-education is a natural right for everyone. In basic education, there should not be one group to be more privileged to have a different education than other group based on the color of their skin. This was a larger step in the history of education for all students to have the same opportunity

The Michigan courts in 1874, ruled in favor for the public taxes to fund for high school and elementary schools. This was essentially important for the establishment of secondary schools since they were considered a luxury more than just a general need for all students. This set the precedent for the funding High Schools. I ranked this in fourth since this allowed for more secondary educational institutions to be created and spread through out the country; making this more available for the public than just for a selective few. Again ties in with rank #1 and rank #2, education becomes more accessible and available to almost everyone- no citizen left behind from the right to education.

#5 The Public High School

Public High schools is the bridge between adolescence to adulthood in my opinion. They are at this institution from the age of 14 through 17. They are very close to become young adults at the age of 18 years old and high school bridges students towards this. They begin to learn higher level of mathematics, English, and other courses introduced to students. Students can use this information to pursue a higher education beyond high school, but also high school teaches students how to act in society as citizens. I ranked this last since I believe all the ranks above lead to the establishment of high school. From the basic rights given to all students, the development of curriculum to teach students, and finally the funding for schools to function leads to these educational establishments to exist. I find it fascinating as someone like me who wishes to be a high school teacher, what occurred in history for education to exist today.
