Tonight is night two of my top ten science of reading videos! For the next eight nights I am going to share one of my top ten! I would love to hear about your top ten too!!!Up tonight… it’s Dr. David Kilpatrick. This is a “snipped clip” from a presentation he did for the Ohio Department of Education’s Literacy Academy in 2019. The reason this is one of my top ten video clips is because Dr. Kilpatrick hones in on one of the most misunderstood and ineffective pedagogical practices we can engage in, “teaching” high frequency words using flash cards by treating high frequency words as paired associate learning. We get a stack of “sight words” and flash the words at students on “flash cards” and ask kids to memorize many, many words. In doing so we completely circumvent the very thing that builds a child’s sight word vocabulary-orthographic mapping. One my favorite statements in Dr. Kilpatrick’s Essentials book: Assessing, Preventing, and Overcoming Reading Difficulties is this, “The irony of the teacher practice of presenting irregular words to be learned as unanalyzed wholes is that exception words require MORE analysis and attention than regular words, not less." (Kilpatrick, 2015, p. 109)In this video clip Dr. Kilpatrick shares an instructional sequence that supports orthographic mapping. The instructional sequence begins with teaching, not memorizing an irregular, high frequency word. I hope you find it helpful.
