    Dally helped Johnny and Ponyboy escape to the church because if the police found out that Johnny killed Bob he could go to jail. But Dally does not want Johnny to go to jail, so he does everything he can to keep Johnny out of trouble. An example from the book is, "'Johnny,' Dally said in a a pleading, high voice, using a tone I had never heard from him before, 'Johnny, I ain't mad at you. I just don't want you to get hurt. You don't know what a few months in jail can do to you. Oh, blast it, Johnny'-he pushed his white-blond hair back out of his eyes-'you get hardened in jail. I don't want that to happen to you. Like it happened to me...'"(89-90). He wants to keep Johnny safe so that Johnny would not end up like himself. 

    Another desire that Dally has is that he wants  Johnny to keep living. After the rumble, he ran out with Ponyboy to see Johnny before he died. He tried to make Johnny happy by telling him that they won against the fight with the Socs, but Johnny didn't like that. He did make Johnny really happy by saying that he was proud of him. "'Damnit, Johnny...' he begged, slamming one fist against the wall, hammering it to make it obey his will. 'Oh damnit, Johnny, don't die, please don't die...'"(149). Dally wants Johnny to live, he even pleads, even though it was too late. Dally never begs. Johnny is the reluctant hero because like everyone else, he is a normal boy but he jumped into a fire to save some kids which led to his heroism and death. 
Johnny is a character who seems to be spooked by everything. He doesn't seem to be able to do anything scary, yet Johnny was able to jump into the fire with Ponyboy to save those kids. Although Johnny is just a normal boy with bad parents, he has a good heart and is willing to help, even though if it means that he might die. "We dropped the last of the kids out as the front of the church started to crumble. Johnny shoved me toward the window. 'Get out!' I leaped out the window and heard timber crashing and the flames roaring right behind me...Then I heard Johnny scream,..."(93). He even pushed Ponyboy out first so that Ponyboy wouldn't get hurt.
