First thing I learned in the Architecture module is the harmony in an architecture. In order for a roman architecture to be beautiful, it has a property composed of numerus (number), finitio (outline), and collocatio (position). The relationship of these three elements creates gentle quality. Numerus talks about proportion, specifically in terms of size, and the relation of one part to another part of the architecture. Finitio is the principle of outline or shape of the architecture. Lastly, collocatio which is the position or location of the building. An example is the Temple of Athena Nike. This temple is the smallest amongst the architectures beside it but the location compensates for its size, being on the edge of a high cliff. Also, to create harmony with the other buildings, it is reduced in size.

Form + Function

Architecture is the only fine art that combines the concept of form and function. In roman architecture, the form consists of three elements, numerus, finitio, and collocatio. These elements make up the form of an architecture. It is important to keep in mind also that the purpose and functionality of the building is not compromised when taking the elements in consideration. The function of the building goes together with the three elements. These two factors are important to see the beauty of a building.

This philosophy of architecture amazes me the most. It promotes harmony between human habitation and the nature by integrating the architecture with its site by design, unifying it with the nature and becoming one. This keeps the integrity as the architecture goes beyond just form and function but also the humane aspect of it. The beauty of nature being a part of a building while keeping the nature intact and making sure that the nature is not being destroyed while beautifying the architecture.
