Uranium was discovered in 1789 by Martin Heinrich Klaproth, a German chemist. Klaproth named Uranium in tribute to the newly discovered planet "Uranus". Klaproth was experimenting with pitchblende ore, and extracted from it uranium dioxide, which he thought was pure uranium. It was later discovered that pure uranium had to be broken down more.

In the United States, Uranium reserves can be found in Arizona, Colorado, Texas, and Utah. Although other mines are also in Wyoming and new Mexico. It is often found in the form of pitchblende.
