The working class consisted of thousands upon thousands of people who came from both rural, urban, and early suburban areas. In 1856, over half of Americans worked and lived on farms; however, by the early 1900s, less than half of Americans still lived in rural areas. This drastic change caused a shift in the workplace for society. The working class was those who worked in factories, earning low wages and working just to afford a living. Many were immigrants or rural migrants who had to find factory jobs in cities to which they flocked, because the era was ending where many would work on farms for themselves and within their families.

The Progressive Era and the drastic changes within workplaces and society were a primary response to the rapid industrialization, urbanization, and political corruption of the late 1800s and early 1900s. With people and society as a whole moving to urbanized locations, unsafe working conditions, lack of government regulation, exploitation, and the rich and the poor, it wrapped into a spiral and caused the progressive era. This caused a differentiation between workplaces. This Era was driven by the need to address the injustices and hardships brought about by the Industrial Revolution. It allowed improvements to be made and society to be changed in all aspects of industrialization.

The working class began to see major improvements during the Progressive Era. Child labor laws were introduced which was a good start to improvement. The workplace began regulating the safety of the people and an improve in wages slowly became common. The great depression had an impactful change with working conditions that worsened and widespread unemployment, however, post WWII, we say an incline in wages, strong unions, and expanded benefits for many in the working-class.

Labor unions became active in these regions as they were fighting for better conditions and wages for people.

Reformers believed the government had the responsibility to fix these problems and protect all people. Their efforts improved the safety rules in workplaces, and new labor laws were in action, making life fairer and safer for the working class.

Like the Child Labor Act of 1916, this stopped child labor across factories and led to stronger laws being passed. The Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 was built on Progressive ideas. It set minimum wages, maximum work hours, and also banned child labor. These laws and acts of protest began protecting millions of workers nationwide. This all allowed the lives of people in society, and a great deal of workers' lives, to be improved and lived peacefully.
