After a while they began to build settlements on the conquered lands. In 870 AD only Wessex was left to resist the Danish barbarians. At this time the West Saxons had a new young king, his name was Alfred, later to be called Alfred the Great.
Alfred was born on the royal estate of Wanating (now Wantage, Oxfordshire). He was the youngest son of Aethelwulf, ruler of the kingdom of Wessex, and his first wife Osborgha, and the younger brother of three successive kings: Aethelbald, Aethelbert and Aethelred. Alfred became King of Wessex in 871 following the death of his older brother Ethelred.

Alfred spent much of his reign defending his kingdom of Wessex from Danish invaders. He won a great victory at the Battle of Edington in 878 but continued to struggle with Danish advances until 896, when the invasions ceased. His success in quelling the attacks was largely due to his superlative defensive strate.

This is the first king in the history of England who uses in his title "king of the Angles and Saxons". Thus, his power extends to all the lands inhabited by the Anglo-Saxons.
One day Alfred's mother showed him and his brothers a book of poems, and then said: "Whoever of you can learn this book more than others, I will give it to him." The boy was very inspired: he was fascinated by the beauty of the capital letters of that book. "Will you really give this book to one of us, exactly the one who will most likely memorize and read it by heart before you?" Young Alfred asked. The mother replied in the affirmative: "Yes, I will give it." Without hesitation, he grabbed the book and ran to his mentor in order to read it, and later learn all the poems. As a result, it was Alfred who got the collection.
According to Bishop Asser, Alfred, among all his brothers and sisters, was distinguished by a thirst for knowledge. Until the age of 12, he remained illiterate, but had a phenomenal memory: the young man very quickly learned Saxon poems that he heard from other people.
