Teenage life 1960s

Teenage life in the 1960s was a blast! Early in the decade there were a couple of trends among the teens. There was monster mania which was a monster/horror magazine and the classic universal monster films that are now on television. Songs like ‘Monster Mash’ by Bobby Boris were a hit. School life involved many cliques like drinking and more, Like today. Although the kids had a lot more respect for the teachers. Discipline was stricter. Most kids were scared of the teachers. Paddling was still a punishment option. Paddle is a wooden stick. It is flat and has a handle and a blade. It is used to strike a person's buttlock. Kids and teengagers were all exposed to smoking by their parents. Smoking was widely accepted. Parents would also let their kids let them run wild in the streets. Sugar was everything and in everything Teenagers would often attend concerts, dances, and soc hops. They would also love to go to drive in movies with their friends.

Class issues

The biggest social fight for freedom and equality. Women fought for equal rights and equal pay. Black Americans also fought for equal rights too. The reason why people got outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin. By 1960 things had changed for women. They were free to work, attend college and delay marriage. Although women were not able to get a credit card, open a bank account, practice law, file for a divorce,vote, be on birth control, keep a job while pregnant. and attend a military academy and more. When women finally got equal rights was in 1972.

Teenage style

Teenage girls enjoyed wearing red silk dresses and a variety of skirt suites. Designers also experimented with acrylics, polyester, and shiny PVC, used on women's clothing while designers were inspired by space and pop art. The men wore Italian-style suits with striped ties, turtleneck sweaters, and boldly patterned suit jackets. Military elements, rock stars, and actors across the nation influenced men's fashion. Leopard print and Go-go boots were also popular fashion choices. Audrey Hepburn and Jakie Kennedy were big fashion icons of the 1960s. They were known for their soft colors and fabrics, pillbox hats, long gloves, high heels, and formal shoes during hours of the day. ¨ On the extreme side of the ´elegant and polished´ style was one full of scoffing at tradition.¨ This quote applies to both men and women because in the 1960s everyone was going for a more clean and sophisticated look. Over all the 1960s have influenced many ideas in fashion history today.

The Socs

Socs are wealthy and more aggressive than the Greasers. They are mean people and normally pick on the Greasers for their looks and class. The Socs are in the rich/ upper class and they drive in fancy cars at night to try to find a Greaser to jump. They wear cotton button-down shirts and tailored jackets. Socs live on the West side of Tusla, Oklahoma while the Greasers live on the East side. Socs are rich, spoiled and rotten people from rich families. They pick on the Greasers just because they are poor and dirty. In conclusion Socs are mean people who pick on people who have less than them, like the Greasers.

The Greasers

Greasers are young boys and teenagers from the working class east side of Tula, Oklahoma. People often describe that as delinquilts. The Greasers have an iconic greasy hair style that makes them recognizable instantly. That's how they like to embrace their social status by keeping their specific look out in public. They normally wear black leather jackets and denim jeans. Unlike the rich Socs the Greasers are economically disadvantaged. This made it easier for the Socs to bully and hurt the greasers. In their community people see them as wild and unruly because of their style and how they look. They also occasionally have bad behavior. Underneath their tough outside, on the inside they care and love deeply for one another. They always make sure to care and stick up for each other.

The Vietnam war

In 1954 Vietnam split into two parts, North Vietnam and South Vietnam. Northern Vietnam wanted to reunite with South Vietnam under Communist rule. However, South Vietnam fought to keep this from happening The United States helped South Vietnam in the war. Unfortunately, South Vietnam lost and North Vietnam won. They were now one country, a Communist country. Sadly, this war caused a lot of deaths in both Vietnam and the United States. Over one point three million Vietnamese soldiers were killed and around fifty-eight thousand US troops were also killed in battle. The soldiers were not the only people trying to survive though. Over two million innocent citizens died in the war, and some were gravely injured. In conclusion, the Vietnam War cost many lives and homes across Vietnam.
