In this group we will be working on early intervention and coping strategies when dealing with online bullying. The spectrum of online bullying is broad, so I intend to focus on harassment which is one of the most prevalent forms currently. The focus age will be incoming high school freshman ages 14-16. I am targeting this group because research proves online bullying tends to start in middle school.

Stage 1

The group will have to first get through the stigma of feeling alone in their journey. The group leader will remind the participants of rules and, confidentiality limits. Then follow with a self introduction. The other group members will follow with their own introduction in order to find familiarity. Ice breakers will be utilized in which the group members will team up and ask each other questions.

Example:

Favorite subject

Favorite food

Future goals

Hobbies

Family life

Dream vacation

Then the group members will take some time to talk about the person they met. This will help to build relationships.

Stage 2

Once the group has been through the first 2 lessons and have learned to identify the different styles of bullying the group will work as a team to come up with action plans on how to deal with these issues. The facilitator will divide the class into a small group each group will have a different section. The groups will then discuss which section they have and what they came up with as way to recognize early signs, cope, and empower others. Feedback and additional strategies will be given by the other members.

Stage 3

To close the group each member will write a paper on what they have learned, and how they feel about using what they have learned in real world applications. This will help gauge the effectiveness of the group and what changes can be made to help. After the counselors will do follow ups to ensure members are still actively engaging in what they have learned.
