Helga Weiss is a schoolgirl who escaped death at an Auschwitz station platform by lying to Josef Mengele, who was one of the most reviled men in modern history. She was one of the only 150 children to survive of the 15,000 sent to Terezin concetration camp. She was also of the many few to survive the Auschwitz, Freiberg and Mauthausen concetration camps.

Her mother was Irena Fuchsova, and her father was Otto Weiss. Her mother worked as a seamstress, which means "a woman who sews for a living", and her father worked at the state bank in Prague. Her father was also an aspiring musician but as a soldier in the First World War, he sustained hand and arm injuries and went on to work in a bank. He married Irena and had Helga in 1929. Helga remembers when her father had left with 5,000 others to an unknown place. She also remembers his last words to her: "Draw what you see!", which inspired her to draw a lot of pictures from then to today.

Today, Helga Weiss is known for her drawings that depicted life in Terezin and also her diary, which she published in 2013

Because she had fooled the officer, she was permitted to work with others who were sorted out to be “good enough” for forced labor instead of being gassed by the gas chambers like the other children like her. To add, she also fooled the officer into believing that her mother was much younger than her actual age, which saved her mother’s life as well.

She went back to her home in Prague. She can still remember and recall everything from her young life. She is right now famous for her diary that depicted life during her time in Terezin or the war.
