I am starting to see how certain types of problems lend themselves to base ten concepts and this is HUGE because kids struggle with base ten.
It's getting easier to recognize what levels students are at to better meet their individual learning needs. Finally, I'm starting to see CGI as a system that's getting so much easier to navigate.

One of the ideas that I am taking away today is the big differences in how to count by tens. If students are able to direct model by counting by tens or if they are recognizing the how place value effects the numbers.
I also did not realize the difference in division types. The measurement division versus the partitive division methods. That will be helpful in getting my students to recognize and solve division problems in the future.

Affording students time, materials and encouragement is vital for them to express their reasoning and process to help them better explain how they solve a problem. Sharing is also important for them to learn from each other.

I am understanding the importance of children facilitating their own learning through whatever strategy both: fits the problem AND they can understand and explain.
I have also taken away that even when their answer is incorrect, if they are asked to explain their thinking, they can usually correct their thinking without a teacher telling them they are wrong- that's powerful!

Previously i have felt like i had to specifically introduce it as its own concept, but now i know it can be interlaced with other types of problems.

When doing multiplication or division problems with our younger kiddos, it's helpful to start with problems were there's an obvious action to act out, and using numbers that are small enough that they can easily solve.
