Mindfulness should be incorporated in the classroom setting. The practice of mindfulness allows students and adults to feel present in their environment. This can be beneficial to all students, but especially those who have experienced trauma and stressful situations prior to entering the classroom setting.

There are a variety of ways that information can be converted from short-term memory into long-term memory. When students have physical or sensory experiences, it can help new learning move from short-term into long-term memory.

A student can only hold so much in his/her short-term memory. Some aspects that they may hold in their short-term memory are names and answers to problems. To ensure learning has been converted to a student's long-term memory, the learning should be assessed quite a bit later, at least the following day after a night's sleep. If a student cannot recall the learning, it has not been converted into long-term memory.

Sensory memories are those that use any of the five senses; sight, touch, taste, scent, or hearing. The two most commonly referred to sensory memories are those that are visual or auditory. These are extremely quick short-term memories. However, it is also known that when an experience occurs and a person's senses are stimulated, it is more likely to be stored in his/her long term memory.

Trauma memories are very different from regular memories or learning. Regular memories change or lose reactivity as time passes. When a traumatic memory comes up for a student or person, their brain can actually react as if that traumatic situation is occurring and they will feel what they felt in that instance. A traumatic memory also does not change with the passing of time.

New learning is retained and transferred to long-term memory when more of the student's brain is engaged. This means they are not just hearing the teacher say something; we cannot expect to talk at a student all day and have them remember everything. Some ways that can improve the retention and transfer of new learning are discussing it with a peer, doing physical activity that goes with the learning, or drawing it out.
