Kara - Week 1 Assemblage.

With my assemblage I wanted to create an accurate representation of my house yard. I live on 25 acres, which mostly consists of paddocks for horses. I have represented this through the dried grass which I have laid across the paper. This dried grass shows a representation of our paddocks as even though we have had some rain over the past year our paddocks have already started to dry out. The rocks which have been layer across the grass which is representing the paddocks, these represent our creek which has been washed out and eroding through paddocks over the past few years after heavy rainfall. The leaves which I have layered across the page represent the tall gum trees which we have surrounding our house. The flowers are then to represent the small garden which I have made out the front of the house.

Draft artwork - Recycled materials.

What?
While gathering materials for this weeks artworks, I hit some speed bumps as our recycling bin had not long been emptied so I had to find another angle to recycle materials for my artwork. For this I instead looked around the house and noticed multiple materials which had been previously bought for one reason or another (gift wrapping, building a fish tank) and I took note of all the materials that we continue to buy for different occasions even though we may have them in our homes. With this thought in mind I have sourced a variety of materials which are able to be repurposed into an artwork, instead of sitting around the house going unused.
So What?
After gathering materials I sat and studied them to provoke ideas of how I could repurpose them into an artwork. At first I was unsure of how I could achieve this, then instead of letting fear of not doing the right thing hold me back I grabbed some scissors and begun cutting the tissue paper to make it easier to manipulate. I then twisted a piece of paper around and around and placed it into the rocks, after this I picked up another square and pinched it in the middle I again twisted to ensure it stayed together, which I then placed into the top of the long twisted piece of paper, I remarked on how it resembled a flower in a garden.
Through manipulating the different materials I have collected I have been able to see the beneficial qualities of incorporating art into the classroom and allowing children to sit and manipulate and fiddle with materials before they create their work in their own time.
Now What?
I am really looking forward to manipulating my recycled materials more and adding to my little garden that I am creating, and utilising this in my stop motion movie.

Stop Motion video

This week we used stop motion to create a movie using our recycled artwork which was created last week. To create this I utilised a variety of materials which I found around the home, these materials weren't 'rubbish' but were materials which had been bought for a variety of different purposes and then were not used. I reflected on how eventually these materials would be thrown out because they are creating clutter throughout different areas of my house. My stop motion uses these materials to represent flowers which are blooming, when these materials eventually would be thrown away they would contribute to the large amount of waste which is in landfill. Through creating this stop motion it has made me evaluate the amount of materials which I purchase for a variety of things, which then do not always get used and eventually are thrown out to go to landfill.

Creating art from music

This week we used music as a basis to create an artwork. We listened to a piece of music and utilised knowledge of the elements of visual art to reflect what we heard through the music. I found this task a little challenging as I am not completely comfortable in my art ability, I focused very carefully on what I was hearing in the music before beginning to draw. I utilised soft swirling lines to represent the softer piano parts in this music, then sharp think lines to represent as the tempo of the music increases. Down the bottom of the page I have used dots and sharp lines to represent where the tempo of the music consistently changes from soft to sharp.

Soundscape for Peter Monamy "Ships in Distress in a Storm."

This week we drew inspiration from an artwork to create a soundscape, I chose Peter Monamy's artwork "Ships in Distress in a Storm". When creating my soundscape I used voice to create an eerie whistle which plays through the soundscape, I then used the piano to create a soft rhythm which is utilised at the beginning and end of the soundscape. I believe this creates a representation of a storm approaching and the retreating into the distance. Through the middle of the soundscape I again used the piano to a deeper rhythm which I hope represents being in the middle of the storm.
I found this task quite challenging as it took me a while to figure out how to use the soundtrap platform, although I believe with more practice this may be an interesting tool to integrate into the classroom when composing music.

Dance and Science

This week we explored arts integration, utilising dance and science as the subjects to be integrated. The task was to research and create a movement sequence utilising the elements of dance to demonstrate the characteristics of an native Australian amphibian, I chose the Australian Green Tree Frog. The Green tree frog is one of the largest amphibians growing up to 10cm long. They like small spaces such as downpipes as they act as a microphone to their "brawk, brawk" call. The green tree frog utilises light to catch it's prey often waiting near a light to catch the insects that lights attract at night, the green tree frog will also scream as a way to deter predators away from its self.
I found this task a little difficult as I was unsure how to begin at first. I considered how compared to myself the green tree frog is quite small, so I tried to use a small dark room when creating my movement piece, I made myself as small as possible and attempted to make my movements smooth and graceful. I also tried to dance as if I were encountering danger, during this I made my movements large and heavy as if I was scaring away the predator.
After I began experimenting with this activity I began to enjoy the process, I think if I was to complete this task again I would be more accepting to step out of my comfort zone and try without criticising myself to much. This would be an interesting activity to complete in the classroom as you would be able to see how different students have interpreted different amphibians in different ways.
