Low self-esteem is a consequence of broken families. In a family of immigrants who have been neglected emotionally? Children in broken, emotionally neglected immigrant families experience a lot of abuse, which has an impact on them from an early age to adulthood because immigrant families that lack emotional stability frequently deny their children the chance to succeed, which harms them, makes it difficult for them to adapt to daily life, and places a heavy burden on their shoulders to endure their trauma and their parent's trauma.

After giving the experiment to the children, they found out that “both current-LBC and previous-LBC had higher mean scores of total psychosocial difficulties, as well as higher mean subscale scores of emotional symptoms, peer relationship problems, and hyperactivity, as compared to never-LBC”( page 4). LBC stands for left-behind children. After the test's administration, it became evident that children who were abandoned and neglected suffered far more than those who were still fortunate enough to have both parents in a secure home.

In the article, they give a survey to kids who have parents who migrated and to children whose parents didn’t migrate. After going through the results, they found out that "children In Ghana and Nigeria, the school performance of children with both parents away is negatively affected when compared to children in non-migrant families” (page 17). This proves that children tend to struggle when the children do not have both parental caregivers with them, which makes them struggle when it comes to their education. If their families stayed together, the children would have a better education performance.

The authors talk about how they understand why parents leave their children so they can eventually have a better life. “Yet, the vulnerability of children who stay behind should not be ruled out, especially when considering the need for parental input for children’s development” (page 17). They say this because they do see how parents migrating could eventually have a good impact on their kids future, but leaving them also has a big impact because children need their parents to help them grow.

This second quote is “ ’It’s hard sometimes because parents leave to provide a better life for their children, but when I see these kids sort of lost, I ask myself, ‘What is a better life?’ Yes, they no longer go hungry. There is always food on the table, but their mother is not there. It makes you think,Really, what is a better life?” (page 12). The Authors ran a study and found that migrants often struggle with "a combination of family separation, a culture of migration, and financial hardships following parental departure ”(page 4). For kids of various ages, this could affect them greatly due to the fact that they need both parents present in their everyday lives to help them grow.

Due to parents wanting a better life for their kids, they leave, but "Consequently, parental migration can worsen schooling among children through various pathways, particularly in the immediate aftermath of departure. The emergence of a “culture of migration” can exacerbate declining social support and increased household responsibilities”( page 4). This means that once the parents leave their children, they will be forced to face life on their own, become their own parents, and suffer through struggles no kid should go through at such a young age, leading back to the question: is this really helping your kids future? Even though this sacrifice could benefit financially, is it good to have your kids go through their adult years alone?

When the parents leave their kids behind, they often leave their children with someone else in their family. The most common family member that takes care of the kids left behind are “grandparents as primary caregivers, compared with parental care, were more likely to face financial strain and health issues but less supportive resources, and these factors subsequently decreased the quality of care provided by grandparents (page 2). Which means, well, the parents are far away from making a better “futer” for their children; they are still struggling, if not more so, when they are given to the grandparents to take care of.

After they went through the test, they discovered, "Moreover, the participants had entered puberty, and the brain maturation increased their sensitivity to real and perceived differences caused by parental migration (page 7). Due to separation from parent and child, they are often more sensitive because they have had to go through life by themselves and are forced to grow up faster because their parents aren't there to protect them. This will be used to support my argument that kids who are neglected by their migrated parents and left behind suffer from many challenges through life.

Some people believe these cycles of emotional neglect from immigrant families need to stop defining the kids that they leave behind. A good example is Reyna Grande despite having poor parents, Reyna was able to overcome her challenges and build a life for herself at the end of the memoir.

"Sin padre ni madre,ni perro que me ladre" (page 8). When she gets to the college campus, she sees her peers with their families, and she is reminded of this saying because she is basically saying that since she left her broken family behind and went to college, now she has no one to bug her. This makes Reyna feel sad and on her own, and it makes her feel like she is left out of something that would help her have confidence in herself.

The other quote I chose was because it shows that no matter what adversity Reyna had to face, she was able to continue to push through and make herself aware. The quote is “I had finally built a home I could carry (page 316). Reyna says this because she's finally been able to accomplish her dreams and make something of herself that she could be proud of to show she made it and to show that other people can make it too.

Is the thesis debatable? I would say yes and no. I think a lot of people would agree that low self esteem can be brought out from broken families. it may be more argumentative to approach the matter that low self esteem is the most damaging consequence from a family that's broken. I don't think the thesis needs to be that long as well, the middle section seems to be stating some evidence as to why you think it is a consequence, but rather it should just be presenting what the argument is.
Yes there are four main points and are presented in a logical order, i would phrase the main points a little stronger!
Yes there are two counter arguments listed. They seem to help your argument though instead of being an opposing viewpoint. The examples are of Reyna Grande who did make something of herself despite coming from a broken family that did have an impact on her low self esteem.

i think there is good depth to these thoughts and great sources. overall pretty well written, and did notice that it focuses on how the struggles of parental migration is what is responsible for a lot of the problems family faces like self esteem so this could also help the direction of the thesis. overall great job so far!
