After reading the article, I see that school counselors, not only has a positive effect on schools, but they are very import. It's stated that it's a required skill set. Being the only person on at a school location that's trained to handle certain behaviors and provide support for a crisis are big shoes to fill. I feel like I can relate a lot to these task with the work that I do at the group home, so I'm glad that I'm getting educated to know the correct ways on paper to be able to perform the correct way. It's also interesting that not all states suck as California do not require school counselors to have additional education. I also did not know that school counselors complete suicide assessments, these services are very important for the school systems.

Core beliefs:

I believe that every child has the capability to learn, their learning style would just have to be met and to me, if children have teachers that are prepared and have patience and are aware that not every child will understand their teaching style, the child can then have a successful learning experience. I also agree that learning difficulties can also start from problems within the home, that a child may be stressed out about that takes their attention off of learning. For an example, if a child has domestic violence at home, they may not pay attention or as much as they should to their work and can be thinking about the issues at home.

School counselor’s role as an advocate:

I believe that the school counselor’s role as an advocate for students is to make sure that each student is being treated fairly, being heard, and meeting their needs. School counselors should advocate for every student. It’s so important that school counselors continue to take trainings better their craft as a school counselor along the way of their career. School counselors advocate to parents and or family, teachers etc. on the behalf of the students. An example of advocating for a student could be the situation above if they child is having a difficult time, adjusting and focusing in class, the school counselor can talk to the teacher(s) about ways to help them work with the child, or let them be aware of the child needing a certain intervention or more time, due to what’s going on at home.0

Ethical standards guide the work of school counselors:

I think that ethical standards guide the work of school counselors because it helps school counselors with guiding students, being able to advocate for them and gaining credibility from students based off their job performance. A.6e School counselors maintain the highest respect for student cultural identities and worldviews. School counselors pursue additional training and supervision when their values are discriminatory in nature and A.4.b Provide and advocate for all students’ pre-K–postsecondary career awareness, exploration, and postsecondary planning and decision-making to support students’ right to choose from the wide array of career and postsecondary options.

Vision statement:

To advocate for students so that they will be able to gain skills for their future in academic, career and emotional development, treating everyone equally and promote guidance and with integrity.

References

https://www.schoolcounselor.org/About-School-Counseling/Ethical-Responsibilities/ASCA-Ethical-Standards-for-School-Counselors-(1)#:~:text=School%20counselors%20maintain%20the%20highest,%2C%20religion%2C%20ability%20statusLinks to an external site.).

School Counseling Competency Assessment- Overview

While completing and reading the assessment I noticed that I had a lot of threes in my scores, I feel that I gave myself these numbers for one being honest and also because I'm not in the field yet and it's a lot to learn and follow through with. My strongest areas includes: advisory council agendas, lesson plans, data and B-PE6 use time appropriately is a strong area that I did well on. I manage my job now, I’m responsible for keeping the paperwork in compliance and that’s a strength I can relate when it comes to documentation of advisory which is said to be twice a year. Lesson plans, I will do well on because I do therapeutic group interventions everyday at work, helping residents with working on daily goals and data will all fall under the same category for documentation.

Areas of improvement:

B-PE7 establish agreement with the principal and other administrators about the comprehensive school counseling program, I would be lost on what all this would have to be done. I would take mandatory and additional training that are posted on the counseling websites. If I were in the career already, I would meet with the principle to see what expectations were expected and just be open to advice on what ways I can improve on. I could shadow someone that I feel has the credibility and integrity that knows their craft and that has been in the field for years that can be transparent and give me critiques. My internship will also be a hands on experience where I feel that I will gain majority of what's needed to mold me into a wonderful school counselor as I learn fast and will execute what I have learned.

The challenge that I may face implementing would be for every child to be present in school. This is why the book would not be read in one day unless every child is present. The age group may be a challenge, but at this age I feel that children will be able to grasp the context of the lesson plan.
