Big Ideas: Natural Resources

One big main idea about the industrial revolution is how it was possible. It was all possible because of the abundance of natural resources. These resources included oil, coal, iron ore, and timber. A bi-product of the oil process was gasoline and gasoline helped fuel the trains. Without these natural resources, the Industrial Revolution would not have been possible.

When the transcontinental railroad was complete in 1869, the 2 railway lines met in Promontory Point, Utah. Railroads shifted the economy from a local economy to a national economy of goods based on specialization and interdependence. People were also able to travel westward because the trip was significantly shorter. Railroads also made it easier for farmers to transport their goods.

George Pullman transformed the way people traveled by railroad. Previous to his invention people were uncomfortable so he invented "Pullman Sleepers." This invention transformed the way people felt traveling. He also created a town called Pullman, Illinois where his workers lived. However, in 1894, his workers went on strike for three months.

In 1896 William McKinley and William Jennings Bryan ran for president. William McKinley won the election and also made a huge impact on the US. He was a Republican and Gold Bug which means he wanted gold to continue to back up money supply. He also had a lot of big money backers that helped during the election. Also ran a "Front Porch Campaign" from Canton, OH.

Vocab Word: Monopoly

This was not the first time I heard this word, however, it was the first time I've heard it in a term other than the board game. A Monopoly is a situation where one company is the only producer of a good, they have control over supply and price. This takes away the competition. Without the competition they can make the prices whatever they want.

The Most Interesting Thing

The most interesting thing I learned in this unit is how close to home this all happened. William McKinley lived in Canton and is the reason for McKinley High School and the McKinley Monument. These things are about a twenty minute drive. Also, in Cleveland there is a street called Euclid Ave. During the Industrial Revolution that street became Millionaire's Row, where massive homes were built. I think this is very interesting because I have walked on Euclid Avenue before and never knew this.

Traveling is one of my favorite things to do. During the Industrial Revolution traveling was popularized because of the ability to get to your destination faster because of the railroads. Although railroads are not as common today, railroads sparked an interest in traveling and inventing new things. Not long after the railroads were invented, airplanes were invented. I believe railroads sparked a chain reaction to new, better ways to travel making it much easier today.
