As a yew tree, it had important symbolism in pre-Christian Scotland and after Christianisation, a church was built beside it. I love visiting it (I used to go once a year) as I remember all who have walked past it and who have worshipped at it or beside it in the church. Thousands of years worth of human hopes, feelings, beliefs and dreams. I like the ritualistic feeling of cooking a nurturing meal and the sense of community when everyone eats at the dinner table. It feels almost like meditation to put on some calming music and to unload the day while chopping up veggies. I often feel spiritual and a sense of self awareness if I spend some time by myself, usually on a walk by the beach. It acts like the ears and eyes of the heart. Connecting you to the universe outside you, inside you, and to others that might be half the way across the world. For me, it relates to the soul or spirit. It can be found in every little thing, a sunset, music, a special place, a journey, a smile, anything that moves your soul... It's embedded in the fabric of life. This is a picture I took when I was on pilgrimage. It felt especially spiritual here because everyone had came from all walks of life, rich, poor, old, young, women and men. The last few years as a family we have spent a lot of time thinking about life, it's meaning, and the afterlife. Being a terminally ill 25 year old forces everyone to confront the big questions. There was a lot of sadness and anxiety, but never despair or hopelessness. I have spent a lot of time thinking about my time on earth and how I wish to spend it. How do I want to be remembered? Is it being remembered even important? 

I took this photo on November on a cold but beautiful morning. Cal had died the night before and his body was to be taken away down the track and it would be the final time he would leave his home and travel down this track. The country track is only used by their family to access their house, and I've travelled up and down it hundreds of times over the last few years. It's seen guests come for his celebration of life service; guests arrive for his parents wedding; Cal's 21st birthday BBQ; it's seen guests come to visit his brother who was born in the same house he died in. 

It seems very poignant to me now and it's a track that is hundreds of years old but has seen this whole family from birth to death. I think spirituality for me is the big questions in life - whether you have a religious belief about them or not.
