In AVFTB Catherine is portrayed as quite a naive character. She seems very popular towards the boys in the community. She lacks complexity but her character but her character gradually changes as the story progressive.
With Eddie, she loves him as a father - wants his approval for everything.

Relationship with other
This quote: "You like it?" is repeated twice and is directed towards Eddie. This insinuates that Catherine is desperate for his attention and constantly looks for his approval. From an audience perspective, this may be due to the fact that Catherine feels that she owes Eddie a lot of appreciation for what he has done for her over the course of her life, as he is her father figure.

Symbols
She represents the theme of desperation of love.

"Now we are quite civilised, quite American. Now we settle for half, and I like it better"

- This quote indicates Alfieri's nationalism for America despite his respect and acknowledgement of his Italian heritage.
- This quote may also represent the symbolism of Alfieri as the 'bridge'; every individual in America setting for one half of the economical, class-based society (the rich or the poor).

"I am inclined to notice the ruin in things, perhaps because I was born in Italy"

- Despite Alfieri's position as a lawyer (which, regardless of the fact that it was high position and very prestigious, is contextually regarded as unlucky as they handle with the 'petty troubles of the poor' and dictate people's lives), Alfieri remains and stands for the fact that he is human as well and that he views everything as pessimistic as most humans naturally incline to do.
- Furthermore, this could show some context upon the state of Italy and how damaged and disconnected it was from the world; especially after the prime of World War II.

another lawyer, quite differently dressed, heard the same complaint and sat there as powerless as I, and watched it run its bloody course.

- the word powerless is the complete antithesis of Alfieri's character; he is a lawyer of who has the power to dictate the livelihood and rights of anybody in America. This 'powerlessness' could be an indication for the fact that Alfieri is unable to allow the personal bond between himself and his client under the theme of Justice and thus he feels 'powerless' despite knowing that his client is guilty or innocent.

RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHER CHARACTERS:

Very oblivious to what Eddie thinks of him, looks up to Eddie

His relationship with Catherine can be considered a genuine love, alternatively he is just using her to “be an American”

Catherine is enthralled by Rodolpho’s striking good looks and unique personality

Eddie despises Rodolpho, thinking he will steal Catherine away from Eddie and go back to Italy.

Rodolpho is good looking, immediately making a strong impression on the audience, Catherine, and Beatrice

Rodolpho and his brother Marco are polar opposites, however, they share an incredibly strong brotherly bond, that is strong and protective.

Eddie is constantly looking for a flaw in Rodolpho, his aim trying to belittle him so he and others can look down on him. However, it’s Eddie’s flaw that’s deadly.

KEY QUOTES:

”I want to be an American.”

Rodolpho thinks being an american citizen can help him escape poverty in Italy

“Sugar? Yes, I like sugar very much!”

Sugar can be a metaphor for the flirtatious invitation Rodolpho is accepting from Catherine

“I want to go back to America when I’m rich, and I will buy a motorcycle.”

“With a motorcycle in Italy you will never starve anymore.”

Rodolpho’s dreams seem too big and unrealistic for the hard life of an immigrant

THEMES REPRESENTED:

Rodolpho can represent naivety, genuinity and hope. Rodolpho has this altered sense of reality, he thinks buying a motorcycle can solve all his problems and achieve his dreams

Dreams vs reality, how realistic are Rodolpho’s dreams compared to the working wages he earns?

Although specifically articulated, homosexuality or what makes a man "not right" is a persistent theme of the novel. Eddie obviously identifies Rodolpho as homosexual because Rodolpho sings, cooks and sews a dress for Catherine. Eddie also questions Rodolpho because he does not like to work and has bleach blonde hair that makes him look more feminine. Eddie gives Rodolpho several tests of his masculinity.

With the theme of homosexuality, we connote him with the characteristics of being eccentric,

Rodolpho comes across as mentally younger than his real age or not seeming to come to terms with the hard life he has as an immigrant and as someone swimming in poverty

EFFECT ON AUDIENCE:

We feel bad for Rodolpho because he is optimistic and in a sense “unaware” of the real world.

We speculate whether he wants to be with Catherine because he loves her; alternatively he just “wants to be an American.”

However, as he as seen as naive, a lot of the audience warms up to him, thinking he does not know better than being kind and innocent. We come to think that he is not capable of being mean.

^ As a result of this, Rodolpho is a popular character as toxic, manipulative themes are often represented in other characters such as Eddie.

SYMBOLS:

Italy, in Rodolpho point of view Italy is a land of a little opportunity however he does want to escape it.

Catherine to Rodolpho might represent different themes, true love or maybe a chance at american citizenship

Eddie Carbone

AVFTB is very closely based on the structure of a classical Greek tragedy with Alfieri as the chorus and Eddie as the tragic hero whose hamartia is his well hidden megalomania and love for Catherine, in an intimate sense. He has a hidden attraction to Catherine and when Rodolpho, who is younger than him, better looking than him and frankly more likeable and relaxed than him, he begins to have a jealousy build up in him. This puts strain on Eddie's and Beatrice relationship because, for one, mother-daughter relationships (especially when the daughter is in her teenage years) are slightly decrepit and, secondly, any wife would have something against her husband being attracted and having a hidden lust for a girl at least 3 times younger than him. Furthermore, he is a man of the era, because of his views on masculinity, especially with that of Rodolpho. Rodolpho sings, dances and displays emotions in a very flamboyant and 'effeminate' way. Furthermore, Eddie is a very anger-prone character because of his position in the 'global hierarchy', so to speak. He is a dockworker, as many other men are. He is a poor Italian man in America, as many are. He is not unique. This would enrage anybody but it hurts him especially. This is why Catherine holds such an important role in his life-she enlightens his very dim and boring life. So, when some 'effeminate', odd man who he doesn't know (never mind trust) tries to serenade and 'steal' the one happiness in his life, he gets scared, then angry and then vindictive- that is his true hamartia. On the other hand, the ordinary nature of Eddie's life can be Arthur Miller's attempt to describe the fact that the situation Eddie is put in could happen to anybody.

Audience -
Afraid of Marco because he is a powerful leader.
Sympathetic and empathises because he always has to make up for Rodolpho's mistakes.
Respects him because he's the peacemaker,
Admires him for his strong sense of responsibility and the care, trust and love he has for his family at home.

Key quotes-

"Marco" - This quote shows how straight-forward and simple Marco is.'

"Marco, his eyes are showing tears"(Stage directions)-Represents how appreciative, optimistic and genuine Marco can be.
"He's a regular bull"-Demonstrates that Marco is hardworking in his work.
"Yes,yes.You'll be quiet Rodolpho"

Relationships with the other characters -
Rodolpho - Big older brother influence. Protective, honourable.

His relationship with Rodolpho is full of trust and genuine love.

As Rodolpho asks Marco for permission to sing,we can tell that Rodolpho relies on Marco for help.

Rodolpho knows that whenever he's in trouble,Marco will come to his aid. He has Marco to lean on. Marco is a caring and a supportive older brother. Marco always comes to his rescue.

Eddie - Grateful for the home. Doesn't want to get on his bad side because he wants to stay. Marco teases Eddie of his angry behaviour when everyone is having fun. He also lifts the chair with one hand, somehow telling Marco not to mess with Rodolpho. If Eddie does, Marco could potentially do something to him. This is a foreshadow of what might happen later on in the play.

Context-

Marco has so emotions and things going on in his life, that he builds a wall around himself to protect himself. He unconsciously makes sure he doesn't get hurt by anyone. With this attitude he could eventually have an emotional breakdown.

He thinks having a manly and a strong character is ideal for someone as broken as him to hide his true broken self.

He has faith, he is devoted to his loved ones. Once he loves someone, he will never stop loving the person.

Character-

Monotone

Hardworking

Strong

Musculine

Emotionless

Speaks less

Symbolism-

He represents the desperate poor Italians who live in Italy.

He represents family and civilisation, for he is the hardworking man who has illegally come to America to earn money to support his family and send money back to his family.

In a way he represent the law,he obeys and does what is right, unless in family circumstances. He is "My practice is entirely unromantic" itself, for he means no nonsense.
