| Book/comic book/video game/movie/other | Your analysis
| Elmer Gantry; Novel by Sinclair Lewis | In the novel, Elmer Gantry, it focuses on a theme of hypocrisy. But also, in The Scarlet Letter it shows a hint of hypocrisy, which I believe can lead to a crisis of identity. For example, Hester plays it off to be a tough person but has a hint of hypocrisy when she pretends not to be weak. A short summary of the novel, Elmer Gantry, would include the following: “Elmer Gantry does not look back to the hypocrisy of an earlier period, but instead takes aim at the hypocrisy of the author's own time. This book is Lewis' satiric look at the fundamentalist religious movements led by tent revival preachers in the 1910s and 1920s. The title character is a hard-drinking, womanizing former college athlete who becomes a successful preacher. He rails against ambition while constantly striving for greater success and destroying many rivals in the process. The book's criticism of religion made it scandalous when it was first published, as many preachers denounced it in their sermons, and it was banned in Boston.” In this novel, the main character preaches about being all proper and religious when in reality he used to do everything he’s telling others not to.

I chose the movie Saw because you’re put into these games/traps when you pretty much sin sometime during your lifetime. Then you also have the other people in the games with you and you’re going to be judging them because they’ve done something bad to get here just like you. The similarity in my opinion is that in “Saw” the Jigsaw mastermind takes carves a shaped like puzzle out of your skin and in the Scarlet Letter they put an “A” on her chest to let the people know she did adultery which is very sinful. So I believe that the puzzle and the “A” symbolize what you have done to get to the point you are in.

Hester feels embarrassed and shameful which is what people want to make her feel like just because she made a mistake. Hancock was put into a good situation and people assumed him as evil. But when he saved people life in the first movie in the bank robbery the thoughts changed. This is how Hester Prynne was perceived as bad when people first saw her. But it was the situation but not the real person she is.

This is a very important book that I think all kids should read so maybe when they grow up they wouldn’t judge others. In The Scarlet Letter, Hester is judged because she had a child with another man when she had a husband. But that doesn’t make her a bad person. This is why kids should be taught to not judge a book by its cover.

I chose the movie The Green Mile for my theme of judgement. The Green Mile takes place in a penitentiary in Louisiana. Inside the penitentiary people are shocked in and electric chair as a punishment for their wrong doings. This movie relates to the Scarlet Letter because in both cases someone is being judged by and punished for their actions.

In this movie, that is based on a true story. It is about Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs. They were famous tennis players and Billie Jean and other female tennis players fought for equal pay, women in the tennis industry were looked at as a joke and not equal to men. Bobby Riggs and Billlie Jean King were the best players in tennis. Billie was the Grand Champion for womens and Bobby Riggs won Grand Champion for men. Billie Jean King wanted to prove to people that she and the whole womens divison was more than just women playing tennis. Just like how Hester is doing by proving to people she was more than a scarlet letter. Bobby Riggs challenged Billie King to a tennis match to see which one could win and SPOILER ALERT: Billlie won and proved that women and men deserve equal pay because they are just as good tennis players as men were.

For the text-text analysis i chose Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet demonstrates the theme of judgment. In the story the families to not get along. They judge each other’s actions, which ultimately results in the death of Romeo and Juliet because they did not want their families to learn about their love for each other. This relates to the theme of judgment in The Scarlet Letter because Hester’s actions are being judged by other people in the town just like Romeo and Juliet were judged by their families’.

For text-to-text, I chose the movie Mulan because both movie and book play with the idea of hiding your true identity and using that to beat your opposition. Mulan hides her identity behind a male garb and not only plays with her enemy's head with thinking shes a guy named Ping but even her closest friend and love interest. Hester
Prynne doesn't hide her identity but her lover's instead, though parallels are still there. They both hide what they did for the sake of others rather than themselves, They both lived in constant fear of consequences for their lies, and they did what they did in a kind of indirect rebellion against their cultures.

I think this movie ties into the scarlet letter by showing that women and men can do the same thing but have different consensuses. I don’t just see this theme in this movie or the scarlet letter but also in real life as well.

They are positive and negative judgement, and it also says that society has a certain way for us to look and most of can’t look that way. It is also saying ways to try to get yourself out of deep thoughts, that bring your self esteem down. Try to relax and except yourself, you slowly become more happy with yourself. In Scarlet Letter it says, “She could no longer borrow from the future to help her through the present grief.” This is talking about Hester and it is saying that she’s ashamed, and she can’t say tomorrow is going to be better, because of society's ways.

A blessing on the righteous colony of the Massachusetts, where iniquity is dragged out into the sunshine! Come along, Madame Hester, and show your scarlet letter in the market-place!’”
Analysis:
In this portion of the text, Hester is being taken to the town square to serve her sentence. She must stand on a platform and be looked upon by all of the townspeople. The idea of this sort of punishment is for her to be publicly embarrassed and for others to look upon her, therefore allowing them to make their own judgements about her. This section of text is an example of the judgement that we see throughout the entire story.

It was his first year in middle school and he is a small, frail, person. He makes the mistake of breaking Rowley’s arm by accident and is judged for that. He is called a jerk and almost loses Rowley as his best friend because of it. This relates to the Scarlett Letter because Hester is judged for a mistake she made and people don’t really want to talk to her because of it.
