The mermaid is the same as the man with the wings, just an outcast from a distant society.

The old man is judged and treated badly because he has wings so they think he's an angel, but he is not a "pretty" angel. The mermaid is laughed at because she has no clothes, and the men blacken her skin with their cigarette buds. Also in both of these, both the angel and the mermaid cannot/do not speak. People make fun of these characters because of their appearances, but they don't even know them.

both show that people, usually show hate or negativity towards things or people they don't know or understand. In AVOMWEW it shows people burning and throwing rocks at the old man. In the poem the drunks are burning her with corks and butts of cigarettes. At the end both the old man and the mermaid have the strength to leave even if it's to death. Even if they needed help they couldn't ask for it becasue they don't know English which is a lonely thing. So people couldn't get to know themeven if they tried

There is an idea on the harshness that humans have on creatures who are different. The man and the mermaid were both lost who could not find their way. They both got treated with brutality and cruelness when they began to interact with humans. After some time, she went back to where she was meant to be, as they say in the poem, referring to "death", the man did that to after some time of living in the chicken coop.
