Reagan and the Democratic controlled House

Many policies presented by Reagan's run in office were viciously opposed by the Democratic controlled House. Hence him not being able to pass legislature in an effective manner as he would have liked. This is not his fault of course, but it does shed some light on if Reagan could have done more with his presidency.

Reagan did, very controversially, supply Saddam Husseins troops with weapons in the Iran-Iraq war. Despite the wildly known fact the Iraq army gassed civilians often. Thus, breaking international war codes. Reagan did even the playing field though, as he supplied the Iran side of the war too. One would think that oil is the name of the game here. Reagan would later ignore and veto a UN resolution condemning Iraq.

When he took office in 1981, unemployment was at 7.5% and dropping. A few months after his economic policies took effect, unemployment began to rise again. Millions of people continued to lose their jobs for the next two years until unemployment exceeded 10%. It stayed above 10% for nearly a year, peaking at 10.8%. Three years after he was elected, unemployment was still higher than when he was sworn in. Then, after criticizing President Carter for having a $50 billion deficit, Reagan’s own deficits exceeded $200 billion. He almost tripled the national debt in only eight years.

Reagan, rather than pressing Detroit to build smaller, fuel-efficient cars, Reagan made clear that the auto industry could manufacture cars with huge CO2 expenditures, without much nagging from Washington. Reagan also intentionally staffed the Environmental Protection Agency and the Interior Department with officials who were hostile toward regulation aimed at protecting the environment. He also dismissed proposals to halt acid rain finding them burdensome to industry as a whole. To provide another side to Reagan, he said this about the public projects and road construction affecting the environment.. " The bulldozer mentality of the past is a luxury we can no longer afford. Our roads and other public projects must be planned to prevent the destruction of scenic resources and to avoid needlessly upsetting the ecological balance".

Reagan Against Government

I chose the Hall of Shame to play devils advocate against Ronald Reagan, but one particular quote by him is very truthful for not only Americans of that time period, but I would argue even more so today. Reagan declared that "government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem." And in many cases that is true, especially when becoming a republican president against a democratic controlled House.
